UPDATED: DEC 28, 2014 Boatswain HLV from Trader Joeís. Malty nose, some vanilla. Medium sweet, no complexity. Full body, but a burnt, astringent finish spoils this beer.

Very dark brown ale, nearly black. Has a nice thick head that holds nicely with a strong lacing. Smells of chocolates, malty, semi-sweet and saltiness. Has a strong flavor but itís not very good. It tastes bitter and dank. finish is heavy and musty. Not a beer I would recommend unless you want a strong beer for a cheap price ($6 a six pack), although I would rather drink their double IPA (same price) which is stronger and better tasting. Not the worst beer Iíve had by any means but not that great either.

Bomber - labeled as Boatswain H.L.V. (Heavy Lift Vessel) at Trader Joeís. A buck ninety-nine for 22 ounces? Youwza. But what the hell is a "Heavy Lift Vessel"?

If I had to guess a style I would say Imperial Red. But whatever.

Bottle. Proper temp and glass. Pours mahogany, an impressive clear, ruby brownish. Medium to large creamy beige head fairly lasting. Aroma is minimal, dry; biscuity, a touch roasty, light fruity maybe a little herbal. Lighter medium body. Flavor is unusual I guess. Fairly strong bitterness. Dry earthy hoppy. Some sugary quality. Could use some refinement but much better than expected based on what Iíve seen here.

Sweet, biscut/buttery/crispy, light fruit aroma. A little roasty. Taste is much hoppier, fairly hoppy ending. Sweet, malty, but fairly bitter.

Bomber from Trader Joeís sold as Boatswain HLV - Pours clear brown with BIG off white head. Aroma and taste is caramel malt with some fruit, just ok, nothing special

Purchased for $2.49 at Trader Joeís under the Boatswain label, the H.L.V. Ale is the strongest of their beers. It has a dark copper color, a dirty looking head, and a sweet, malty aroma. The flavor is a heavy, alcohol, medicine taste with a little bitterness. I would place this third on the list of the three beers available at TJís behind the stout and IPA.

Bomber from Trader Joeís labeled Boatswain HLV. Deep brown pour with light tan head. Aroma is brown sugar, nutty, caramel. Tastes are same with dried fruit and a perfume vibe. Strange tinny/metallic bitterness. Not crazy sweet which turns me off many browns, but not very good overall.

Labelled as "Heavy List Vessel [HLV]"... I was offered this for free. Offered this out of a bomber. Not sure of the price... no bottling date on the bottle either. Alrighty then. Poured into a shaker pint. Appearance: The highlight. I was told this was an IPA, but I figured that was wrong just by looking at it. This is a dark brown beer with a nice beige head on it. Lacing is really nice. Looks to have great clarity. The highlight of HLV, no doubt. Smell: Ugh. A mess, to be honest. Malts, stale (best way I can describe it) hops, and... soy sauce? Not God awful, but not exactly pleasant. Strange, to say the least. Taste/feel: Safe bet that this beer is insanely old, I think. Iím not sure of the date (like I said), but I donít think I was drinking the same thing as others here... then again, maybe I was? I doubt it though. Thereís virtually no balance. It has a weird, strong metallic sort of bitterness, with malts trying to balance it out -- but it doesnít work. Itís a weird mesh of bitter and sweet, and itís just not working right. The flavor itself isnít very good either -- tragically unbalanced with a pretty strong presence of alcohol. I know that this is a "Strong Ale", but the alcohol is ridiculously prevalent here. The feel is medium... relatively thin. Not very carbonated. A third time -- Iím pretty confident this beer is well past its prime, though Iíll never know. Based on this experience, I wouldnít want to try HLV again, but itís probably not normally this unpleasant. I can see why I was offered to try some.

Bottle. Pours dark brown with tan head. Nose and taste of maple sugar, birch sap, brown sugar, sweet tea, resin, sticky dark caramel and earth. Medium body.
