Dark Brown, Medium Bubbly Head That Does Not Last, Decent Lacing. No distinctive aroma whatsoever. Sweet, chocolate, malt, hop bitter finish with slight alcohol Zing. Although this is one of my favorite styles, this is average at best. Rather dull and forgettable. The only good thing going for it is that hoppy finish. Booze shines too much for the style. Meh.

Sampled from Trader Joes. A fair brew. Nothing special and no need to return, but it was fairly priced and had a decent hop palate.

Bottled as Rhinelander Boatswain Heavy Lift Vessel Ale. Dark fruit flavor, maybe raisins, in a medium-bodied ale. Base of roasted malt.

Dark brown with a fizzy head. Aroma is bran, raisins, and brown sugar. Flavor is too sweet. Overall, this is drinkable, but too sweet.

This very dark brown ale has a rather typical ale aroma. It has a malty richness and a bitter hop bite. For $1.99 for 650 ml it's a steal. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

An interesting beer. Pours a very nice dark red with a thick tan head. Smells and tastes like oatmeal. A little bit of a weird aftertaste. Had in the bottle. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Interesting. Had the heavy lift vessel ale from Trader Joes. Pours a very dark red, with not much head. Malty yet hoppy taste. Strong tasting. Very hoppy aftertaste. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Pour is dark brown but transparent. Light head but a good carbonation level. Smells like a roasty nut brown ale. Not a bad aroma at all. Not great either. Just kind of simple. Taste is more of the same with some graininess. Malt profile is a bit weak and flabby. Not bad. Drink this really cold if you have it..

Bottled as "Boatswain H.L.V. heavy Lift Vessel." Bottle from Trader Joe’s, Charlottesville. Pours a clear brown, frothy head with nice lacing. Smells of wet leaves and sour grapes. Tastes of bubblegum, burnt malts, and sugar. Long lingering alcohol taste that seems like it’s more than 7%.

Bottle in KC picked up at Trader Joes. Pours a clear, dark reddish brown appearance with a nice brown head. Mineral, cracker, lightly nutty, caramel aroma. A bit tangy, light chocolate, slightly nutty, bready, caramel flavor. Pretty bland and not a whole lot going on.

22oz. served into a snifter glass. A - Pours a super dark brown with ruby highlights. A firm 2" tan head ministers beautiful arbitrary lacing. S - Cocoa powder, wet grain, caramel malt, copper penny, grassy, bready yeast, brewed tea, hints of malt extract. T - Molasses, iron, English tea tannins stick to the cheeks, roasted malts, cocoa, burnt caramel/toffee malts layer against the tannins. There’s faint hints of herbal hops in the background. Finishes fairly dry with a coating of tannins. M - Medium lush body, with moderate carbonation, thins out when warm. This fits an English Strong Ale rather than the American version. Strong tea tannins pair with cocoa and a rich toasted caramel backbone with an herbal bitterness. This works well for an English Style. Serving type: bottle 08-11-2012
