2.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
22 ounce bottle
Picked up at Trader Joe’s as "Boatswain HLV Ale" this was a low risk gamble at $2.99. For that reason only I picked it up. Otherwise if this were priced in line with many other bombers I likely would have skipped it in favor of a number of other beers. Buy it only for the tick.
Aroma / Appearance - The fluid pour isn’t bad. As the brownish black base seeps into the glass it adds a dirty khaki head. Black cherries, malt, and whipped cream are strongest. The background is a passable roasted texture.
Flavor / Palate - Mildly warm, the first impression is not that great. Chocolate and cola lead to a latent bitterness that grows over time. For the price this wasn’t terrible. Even so I think it will be a while before I grab another one of these budget beers. There are plenty of other things to choose that are better.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Sweet and malty with notes of molasses and coffee. There is a subtle hop finish. Overall a little thin and not very complex.

3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
wood chips, powdered sugar, caramel & coffee I smell. clear dark brown with solid khaki head. a pwedery feel in the mouth. the hop flavor hitnts to the metallic but with the solid dark sweet background—caramel, wheat toast, plywood, peaches—‘tisn’t bad. warming. finish leaves the mouth dry.
don"t know why the reviews are as low. it’s a hoppier than usual beer. maybe folks feel they don’t have to be as respectful cause it came cheap ($1.99 for a 22) @ trader joe’s/

2.5 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
Interesting. Had the heavy lift vessel ale from Trader Joes. Pours a very dark red, with not much head. Malty yet hoppy taste. Strong tasting. Very hoppy aftertaste.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
bottle - Pours dark amber-brown with a small tan head. There’s some clear hops presence in the aroma along with caramel malt. There’s a good, sweet flavor up front with well balanced hops and lingering bitterness. It’s actually pretty good, a good one from the Rhinelander bunch, some of which are quite mediocre.

3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Bottle. Like a sweet hoppy mild so maybe not like a mild at all. Bold calling a beer Traditional in Alberta. Hard to believe the IBUs are at 80. If they could dry it out it might be a cool beer.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle at the St. Paul Summer Beer Fest. Rich amber pour with a creamy head. Fig/raisin, a little syrupy - not a bad offering.

3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
22oz bottle. Rating #63. Cloudy dark brown pour with a nice tan head that left a little lace. Strong malty aroma, caramel and some raisin with just a hint if soapiness. More soap up front with the flavor, that faded into more sweet caramel with a hoppyness following that. Not terrible, especially for a $1.99. (2402)

2.2 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 8/20
Malty, toasty. Flavor is somewhat off, perhaps with a burnt touch that seems a bit nasty. Hints of earth (dirty) and grass with a touch of hops in the finish, but overwhelmed by the downsides.
