2.6 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
UPDATED: SEP 3, 2012 Bought as Boatswain’s Heavy Lift Vessel. Not a bad beer, but definitely not great either. For $2 a bomber, it is well worth the price. Just don’t buy the Boatswain’s Double IPA, it tastes like ass.

Cheers!

HLV from Trader Joe’s. Pours hazy dark tawny brown with a bubbly, frothy beige head. Tastes lightly butter, light hops, nutty, roasted grains and cocoa, light sweetness, toast. Light body and low carbonation. Smells like sweet roasted grains, hops, light alcohol.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Boatswain H.L.V. Ale has a thick, spongy, cream-colored head, a dark brown, bubbly, opaque appearance, and a little bit of lacing left behind. The aroma is of sweet, syrupy, dark-roasted barley malt or brown bread crust, and the flavor is of that element, with strong, straight-forward bitterness and sugar. Mouthfeel is medium to heavy, and Boatswain H.L.V. Ale finishes rich, sweet, and semi-wet. Overall, this one is surprisingly good. I recommend it! RJT

Good solid beer with slight roasted taste. I recommend drinking this after a car show while sitting on the porch for your dads birthday.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
This is an okay dark ale, though its strange to think of this as a brown ale. Heavier mouthfeel than I expected and the sweetness is more understated and metallic. Picked up at Trader Joes in DC in 2014.

3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Rated on 5-25-2012 (Bottle) The appearance is a medium sized frothy, semi-fizzy tan head with a short retention, transparent ruby brown body, fizzy carbonation, and a fair amount of lacing. The aroma is caramel malt, roasted, pine hops, sweet, and spicy. The flavor is sweet, pine hops, spicy, malt, and a hint of smoke. The mouthfeel is lively and this beer is light bodied. Overall, this beer has a nice hop flavor and is worth trying.

Bomber. Dark brown with amber highlights and a nice long lasting tan head. A toasty, hop free aroma that is sweet and malty. There are lots of malts in here along with some herbal and grass notes. A zesty bitterness. This beer has a medicinal quality that is not really pleasant. But then that somehow melds into a green effect. Not a great beer.

2.7 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
Boatswain HLV from Trader Joe’s. Malty nose, some vanilla. Medium sweet, no complexity. Full body, but a burnt, astringent finish spoils this beer.
