Bottle, 22oz. As Boatswain HLV Ale. It pours a clear, brown body under a big, off-white head. The aroma has a touch of coffee grit, with roasted malts and some chocolate. Dry, medium-bodied and very soft on the carbonation. Chocolate, roasted malts, some hoppy bitterness and coffee grit in the flavor. Long, bland, roasted finish. Might need some food, certainly didn’t impress on its own. 130808

Bomber from Fresh & Easy in Vacaville, CA. Pours dark brown with a 3 finger foamy tanhead. Light aromas of malt and citrus/floral hop. Med+ body. Flavor is a little brown sugar/cola with some mostly floral hop. Seems well balanced - sweet and bitter simultaneously. But in the end I think the bitter wins handily. Considering the price was 2 bombers for $4.99 this is a pretty good deal.

Bottle under name of Boatswain HLV Ale. Poured dark brown color with a large frothy brown head that mostly lasted with good lacing. Moderate toasted sweet malt and smal hop aroma. Medium body with a smooth texture and soft carbonation. Medium to heavy toasted sweet flavor with a medium to heavy bittersweet finish of moderate duration. Solid drinkable brew.

Bottle in KC picked up at Trader Joes. Pours a clear, dark reddish brown appearance with a nice brown head. Mineral, cracker, lightly nutty, caramel aroma. A bit tangy, light chocolate, slightly nutty, bready, caramel flavor. Pretty bland and not a whole lot going on.

Comes across like a black ale, with some hops. Just not that drinkable. Passable taste. Big dark head. Slightly underaverage mouthfeel.

Bomber from Trader Joe’s Glen Allen. Pours a clear dark mahogany color with a large foamy tan head. Good head retention. Aroma of caramel malts, faint nuts, some mild herbal hops. The taste is caramel malts, strong green apple and a nutty finish. Medium bodied. Not terribly good.

651mL thanks to Alex. Pours deep maroon looking black in the glass with a larger, tan head. Not bad retention wise. Suddy looking lace. Nose is sweet raisin, slight brown sugar, moderate old stickiness. Lots of oxidized red apple and old cidery character. Leave this out just for a minute or so and it gains tremendous acetaldehyde and old apple slices. Taste is ultra metallic with cloying old sweetness. Astringent bitterness in the background with old apple juice overlaid. Really, very impressive to make such a complexly terrible beer. Nice job.
