Bottle from Champanes, this ale had a brown pour with a trace of haze into the glass, the pour made a one to two finger faint off-white / light tan head that receded to an island of a cover and ring, it left spots and large fingers of lacing on the glass, the bottle had a thin ring of sediment on the bottom of the bottle, this brown ale had aromas of toasted malt, nut, chocolate, faint caramel, malt and brown sugar sweetness, the aromas were not that big on the nose, it had flavors of toasted malt, caramel, chocolate, a brown sugar like sweetness, some prune like dark fruit, a little mint from the hops(?), the finish had toasted malt, sweetness and some hop bitterness, the sweetness was pretty strong, the mouth feel was medium maybe a touch more, it was a little sticky on the lips and there was soft to average carbonation, the nose on this beer was not that big, the flavor was bigger, the sweetness was pretty prominent and kept this beer from getting a better rating, a bigger nose and less sweetness would help this drink.

I had this bottled as Boatswain HLV from Trader Joe’s. It pours dark brown with an average head and lace, and the aroma is spicy malt, applebutter, allspice. The flavor is decent. Not great, but decent. It’s slightly boozy like an American strong ale, with a strong, oaky finish. The beers at Trader Joe’s are typically the best in their price range. This is as good as any twenty-two ounce beer you’ll find anywhere for less than $3.

Pours dark brown with a tan head. Toffee, caramel, malt and biscuit aroma and flavors. Slightly oxidized. Medium body and carbonation with a malt and toffee finish.

Appearance: dark mahogany, with garnet highlights; short, creamy tan head quickly vanishing to a bare wash of bubbles. Aroma: muddled notes of wet cardboard, molasses, soggy brown bread, nutmeg, light clove. Taste: molasses, pumpernickel bread, cardboard, light smoke, hint of umami. Finish: sweet, muddled malts and a hint of booze. Notes: Terrible. Muddled and overwrought.

22oz bottle pours with a clear rosy red to amber body that supports a tan head. The aroma offers up a mix of cherries, prunes, brown sugar, molasses and honey covered hazel nuts. The taste however is nearly the same as I get brown sugar coated prunes and cherries blended with molasses and thin sweet nuttiness. Interesting.

Bottle, under the Trader Joe Boatswain HLV label. Murky river water brown, with little head, there’s little up-front appeal. The first whiff doesn’t help either ... this eventually drinks like a mushy, overly sugared caramel malt beer. The body is far too thin, and all told this is simply off balance. (#5582, 7/22/2014)

Drank as Rhinelander Boatswain Heavy Lift Vessel Ale from Rhinelander Brewing Co from a bomber. Boatswain HLV is not too bad given the price at Trader Joe’s. Low aroma coming from a dark brown pour probably because of the flat head. Taste is sweet and malty with slight scotch notes and a little alcohol warming. Its as if it was stored in a liquor barrel. Mouthfeel is flat. Boatswain HLV is not too bad but the lack of carbonation probably holds back some of the better qualities that might come out.

Medium brown. Some spicy hop, sweet honeyish notes, an odd aroma but I actually like it. Sweet and a bit fudgey, with a thin body and a little bit of hop spiciness.

22oz from trader Joe’s. Brown pour with white head. Malty smell taste and after taste. I thought this was fine

Reviewed from notes. This was poured into a snifter because I thought it was a strong ale. The appearance was a ruddy burnt orange to brown color with a slight transparency about it. There’s some light lacing after the head dissipated. The smell was weird as there’s some burnt grainy malts going inside of some burnt caramel breadiness with a lot of booze coming in. The taste was basically the same as the smell. On the palate, this one sat about a medium on the body with not much of a sessionable quality about it. The carbonation seemed to be okay as a brown ale or a strong ale. Overall, brown ale or strong ale, well the boozy part is there. Honestly, I wasn’t really digging the smell and the taste. I probably wouldn’t seek this out again.

Cheers!
