COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
There are times when an ice-cold beer fits the bill. This is an easy-drinking brew that’s reliably tasty without being fussy. It’s a straightforward beer with good hop flavor without it being over the top. This speaks of a simpler time when you could order a beer, and they wouldn’t bring you a full menu. They’d just bring a good beer at a good price. Life can be complicated, but your beer does not have to be. Enjoy the taste of Simpler Times.

$3.99 for a sixer of cans at Trader Joes. Slight aroma of apple. Flavors of apple, grain; a slight sweetness. A tinge of alcohol, some bitterness; a decent amount of body, yet clean tasting. Surprisingly not terrible.

Very light with a sweet corny tasting malt profile and tastes nearly hopless. No the worst beer, but certainly not anything special.

12oz can. Pale yellow color, that is slightly darker than a standard American macro-lager. Aroma is lightly malty and sweet. Flavors taste like an upgraded American lager, but really not much better. It doesn’t make me sick to my stomach the way a bud or miller would. It may be cheaper than the other beers at Trader Joe’s, but if I wanted something like this, I would have bought a Macro.

This beer mocks you for expecting a range of choice? It smells sweet, corny and sugary, and almost estery as if it is in on some cruel joke about false style-expectations. Effervescent yellow beer, initial head collapses fast. Apple core sweet taste, hairy aftertaste. Described as ’lawnmower beer’ it also has the consistency of a cola. Take a pass on this one.

Can at Vanessa/Darren’s house in Portland, OR. Golden pilsener body with medium head. Nose of corn, malts, sweet. Taste is caramel, malts, toffee, honey and. Watery and slightly syrupy texture. Just rather thin and not so good really.

12 oz can courtesy of beastiefan2k. The pour is clear golden yellow with a fizzy white head that falls quick. The aroma is generic sweet malt, with a hint of earthy corn. The taste follows the nose, mostly about the sweet malt, thought the corn is pretty well integrated and subdued in the taste. The palate is light to medium bodied, course carbonation, and a sweet finish. Overall, clean enough, though a bit too sweet of a Lager for me.

April 23rd, 2012 - Trader Joe’s Simpler Times Lager is another of the simple, cheap and affordable lager offerings alongside their informal award winning Name Tag Lager. This kind of beer is typically relegated to the room temperatures of my pantry where they await to be used in culinary applications, but I can’t turn down sampling at least one serving, if not for the review, than to expand my understanding of what the proverbial bottom of the barrel looks like. Simpler Times isn’t dreck per se, but it’s a thin brew, chasing minimalism over complexity. The color is the anticipated deep fried gold color, clear and true, and produces a nice winter morning frosting effect on the glass. Apple and a touch of nutmeg deliver their scents to the smell, though it’s a bit shallow. Simpler Times probably stands out from the rest of the lagers on the shelf in its depth of flavor. A deep, essence-of-lager flavor permeates all the way through the sip, bringing some of that apple and nutmeg from the aroma to the taste too. Considering the style it’s not bad, and would probably boost recipes that call for a pour of beer.
