Can from Trader Joe’s. Clear yellow-gold pour. Aroma is big sweet grain, floral and corn. Tastes are a mellow mix of the expected grain and some grass hops. Corn isn’t overwhelming. Certainly not offensive (especially for 4 bucks a sixer). A fair bit better than the macro equivalent.

12 oz. can from Trader Joes. Pours clear light gold with a soft white head that settles to a thin film. Aroma has sweet grain corn and apple. Taste is as above with a faint bitterness and somewhat of a harsh swallow. Palate is thin and dry.

PorterPounder (5358) - Tallahassee, Florida, USA - OCT 17, 2013
Tallahassee, Fl. - Trader Joe’s - 12 oz can. Medium golden pour, slightly murky, with a bubbly snow white head that sticks around a while. Aroma has some grassy notes, a hint of mosquito spray. Flavor has a touch of honey sweetness, some wholesome graininess, a touch of nuttiness and some back end lager blandness. Mouthfeel is thick enough, Does in a pinch.

Throwback can. Clear yellow beer with a slightly off white head that lasts for a bit. Powdery, light malt aroma. A slight cereal husk astringency, lightly sweet, pleasantly bitter. Reasonably clean lawnmower/tailgate material. Trader Joe’s, Tallahassee.

12oz can, $0.59 from my local Trader Joe’s. Clear golden color. Thin white head, leaves decent bits of lace. Bready, spicy, kind of peppery aroma, with some musty, basement type aroma in the finish. Lighter body. Smooth, kind of crisp carbonation. Lightly dry finish. Moderate bitter taste, light hint of tart. Better than expected.

Yellow Color, Medium Head, Decent Spotty Lacing. Not Really A pilsner. Sweet Corn, Slight Malt. Watery. Drinkable, but not really good. Cheap, Comes from Minhas, Monroe, WI, so no real surprises. Pass It...

Yeah, this isn’t really a pilsner. This is just another cheap grainy lager, although for 4 bucks a sixer, it’s good for making brats.

12oz can. Not really a traditional pilsener, almost doesn’t deserve the moniker. Pours clear, dull yellow, good lacing and a nice full head. Poor aroma, scary. Grainy and korny. The taste is ok, nothing remarkable for a pale lager...a little bitter, not fresh. A bit better than macros but not much.

Simpler Times Pilsner has a thick, somewhat off-white head, a clear, golden appearance, with lots of bubbles and tiny white specs floating throughout, and heavy lacing left behind. The aroma is of dank, sickly-sweet grain husk and dirty barley, and the flavor is of those elements, with a cheap, store-brand bread flavor and an unpleasant hop bite at the end. Mouthfeel is light to medium, and Simpler Times Pilsner finishes wet, dirty, and marginally drinkable. Overall, the only thing going for this beer is that it has such unusual characteristics, that it’s worth a try, just for the novelty of it. Price is not an advantage, because one can buy much better-tasting Miller or Anheuser-Busch beers for a lower price. Also, Simpler Times Pilsner should be consumed at the lowest possible temperature above freezing. I recommend it, and that’s for the weirdness of it, not the overall quality. I will not ever have it again, for sure. RJT

Pours a nice straw with about 1" of head. Smells like cornflakes and honey. Palate is very light. Effervescent carbonation. Taste is corn, light floral hop, pale malt, hay, fairly sweet. Not much of a pilsener, more of a premium lager. Not unspeakably awful, and probably the best beer you can get for $3.50 a sixer. Compares favorably to Schlitz, though its quite a bit sweeter.
