2.5 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20
Bottle at Sander’s place, NYC. Pours clear orange with a fine, foamy head. Alcohol, pine and orange on the nose. Tastes sugary and metallic, some ripe orange. Medium bodied with fine carbonation. Light resinous finish, boozy fruits, metal. Really rough beer.

June 2nd, 2012 - Here’s another of the inexpensive Boatswain Trader Joe beers that gets a lot of attention and talk time from my friends. They always wonder aloud whether a $3 bomber of beer can be good. I tried to keep an open mind after recognizing Samuel Smith’s beers as simultaneously inexpensive and generally quite good, especially in the case of the oatmeal stout. However, the Boatswain American IPA leaves something to be desired, and if it comes down to a constrained budget, I’d much prefer to get a six-pack of Trader Joes’ other in-house offerings, or even the Velvet Merlin that’s taken up residence on one of the shelves. By all appearances it’s a solid beer, exhibiting that nice and inviting frosty amber color, and the standard cap of mottled white. The flavor is also fairly standard. The Boatswain American IPA is not too happy, and features an awkward twang of sweet and piney hops, with a nice malty finish to offer a good background of honey and pine. Of the Boatswain offerings this might be the strongest at its price point, I’d still rather reach a little bit deeper into the coffers and bring home something with a little more depth of personality.

Bottle from Trader Joe’s, Belingham, WA; 6.7% ABV
as Boatswain American IPA
Hazy amber color with creamy head. The aroma is fruity but also a bit old. Mild caramel flavor, with a feeling of old; semi-sweet, with some caramel flavor, sweet and fruity hopping.

2.3 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 8/20
Tasted from a 22oz. bottle under the name Boatswain American IPA. Poured a rich amber with a foamy, beige head, but this beer by any other name..... should still be avoided.

2.5 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
I had this beer out of a bottle, but it was titled Boatswain American IPA. It had a creamy beige head that was quite foamy. It had a watery caramel taste to it with a stale beer aroma. I was not that impressed.

2.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 11/20
Bomber from Trader Joe’s Bakersfield called Boatswain American IPA. Nose is light citrus with mild grassy notes along with a hint of caramel malt. Clear copper with a big, heavy lacing, long lasting offwhite head. Flavor is light bitterness with some contrasting caramel sweetness. Finishes with a small bitter hint. not bad drinking for $1.99 but not nearly as aromatic or flavorful as most other IPAs I drink.

2.5 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
Boatswain trader joe version. Aromas of caramel, grass, bread, although mild Nice looking amber, orange, in color...head fades fast. First taste is heavy sweetness. Laced with caramel, malty flavor which isn’t bad...but not typical american ipa. Thin, slick body. Finishes with barely there bitterness...not at all balanced with the sweetness. Promising begining, poor finish.

3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 12/20
Flaska.
