Fiercely hopped and hopped again, Thumper IPA keeps on going and going. Does it tantalize your tongue?

A- Pours a crystal clear amber with one finger of cream colored head that forms a solid top barrier. Minor specks of lacing. S - Light citrus, maderin orange, caramel malt, doughy yeast. T- Leafy green hops laced with citrus, caramel malt, tea tannins, alcohol is very present. The hops turn earthy and herbal on the finish, mixing with alcohol creating an astringent perfume character. M - Creamy soft feel, light to medium body. The aroma reminds me of an American Pale Ale. The hop flavors are there but things seems manufactured. There’s a strange artificial flavor going on. No freshness, just the ample amount of caramel malt stands out. The market is so saturated with IPAs that you have to bring your A game when it comes to this style. Serving type: bottle 07-12-2012

Didn't like it that much. Sure it beats the average rice beer but just didn't like the flavors. Too sweet for me. Had a amber kinda malt and mild hop flavor but something else in it turned me off. Bought a couple other and hope I like them better. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle: The aroma consists of moderate caramel, sweet fruit, orange, and some light aged herbal hops. It pours a transparent amber with a one finger off-white head that quickly settles to a thin film. The flavor starts moderate-heavily malty with caramel and toffee. There’s a light fruitiness in the background. The finish has light-moderate citrus and herbal hops that definitely taste old. It’s medium bodied with moderate carbonation . Overall, I always hesitate to buy any of the Trader Joe’s mixture of IPA’s, but I end up taking the chance because they are so cheap. As is usually the case, I end up feeling like I should have passed over them. This one is no different. Way too malty for my IPA preferences and the hops taste old.

22oz bought at Trader Joes in Salem OR aka Boatswain American IPA. $1.99 Looks OK deep burnt orange with a fluffy, rocky off white head. Fruity ,caramel, toffee aromas..not much hop. Taste is pretty malty..its pleasant enough for a second then some raw alcohol which i would expect with a 10% Ultra Malt Likka but not an IPA. Thin palate Not good a horrible IPA and only a reasonable Malt Liquor..

Pours light tan with a bit of tan head. Can’t quite smells the hops that I was expecting to. A bit of musty tangerine as well. Taste is pretty sweet and not too bitter. Overall tastes more akin to an amber ale than an American IPA. Its not a miserable beer but I think they got confused with what they wanted to brew.

22oz bottle, labeled "Boatswain American IPA", just $2 from my local Trader Joe’s. Shared with friends over a game of Catan. Mostly clear orange-red color. Thin off-white head, decent retention. Loose lace. Medium body. Smooth, lighter carbonation. More dry in the finish. Caramel malts, light fruity hop, kind of soapy. Sweet taste, light bitter. Nothing great about this, but nothing really offensive.

Pour from a 22oz bomber. Deep orange brew with small head but very active carbonation. Aroma of caramel, brown sugar, over rip fruit. Taste is sweet from start to finish. Caramel malt at the start transitioning to a fruity / brown sugar finish. HInts of ethanol at the end. Mildly hopped despite the 70 ibu’s. This is more like a sweet amber ale than an IPA. Overall, not all that pleasant no matter what. THe name and label are nice, though.

supposed to be an "American" IPA but this is very English. if you like Amber Ales, this is the IPA for you.
