Fiercely hopped and hopped again, Thumper IPA keeps on going and going. Does it tantalize your tongue?

Nothing really stood about this beer to me, other than it didnít taste much like an IPA, maybe a pale ale. Had under the Underworld label.

First off, when you go in expecting an IPA, you will be completely dissapointed. That aside it wasnt unpleasant just not what i expected. It could have been old and lost some hop character. Had more of an ehglish yeast and malt character that an american IPA. It grew on me but feel short on style guidelines

Aroma is citrus, medium sweetness and tea. The flavor is citrus, mild earth/dirt, sweet malts and sour/tart twang in the finish. Not horrible but something was mildly off about this.

Pours a beautiful orange/amber with a medium tan head with good legs. Nose is very faint citrus hops, a little soap, a little bread. Sweetish flavor that turns later slightly astringent and bitter. Watery mouthfeel. Meh.

As Boatswain American IPA from Trader Joeís. Medium copper color with a cream colored head. Aroma is sweet bready malts - very pilsner like as many others have mentioned. Maybe just a hint of an earthy hoppiness. Flavor is quite malty sweet, almost artificially so, with only some slight bittering hops present at the finish. I could maybe see this as a pale ale, but certainly not an IPA. Medium bodied with a syrupy mouthfeel. Clearly this is not an IPA by any craft beer drinkerís standards considering the uber-sweetness and utter lack of hops.

22-oz bottle at Trader Joes. The aroma is sweet caramel, grassy, cardboard, some skunk. Almost has a pilsner-like aroma. Dark amber, clear, with white head. The flavor is caramel, cardboard, some citrus. Medium in body, maybe slightly thick. Again, maybe some pilsner like qualities. Citrus, and pine bittering on the finish, some malt sweetness. Definitely more malt foward than a beer like this should be. Not great.

22-oz bottle at Trader Joes. Pours a dense dark amber with lingering white head and lace. Mild hop aromas. Medium body with pronounced maltiness and subdued hop bitterness and flavor. Not really IPA like.

Picked up at Trader Joeís where it is called Boatswain (and was just un-boxed and put on the shelf) or some such nonsense. The 22oz bomber pours clear copper with effervescent loose off white head. The aroma offers up pilsener malts, sugary malts and mineral notes. At this point Iím wondering if they neglected to add the hops. If I concentrate maybe there are vague faint hops in the background. The taste is sadly similar and disjointed and basically a mess. I get sugary sweet maybe pilsener like malts and vague to possibly floral bitter hops pulling apart the experience with the help of a mild but odd nonetheless mineral note. This just . . . well, not sure what this is.

A very poor example of an IPA. Taste is acceptable but instantly forgettable. Only positive is the cheap price.

Purchased as Boatswain American IPA. Gold color and tall white head. Mild hop aroma and hop flavor with a light malt base. This really is anít bad at all, and I donít understand the low scores.
