3.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 11/20
22-oz bottle at Trader Joes. Pours a dense dark amber with lingering white head and lace. Mild hop aromas. Medium body with pronounced maltiness and subdued hop bitterness and flavor. Not really IPA like.

2.5 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 8/20
Picked up at Trader Joe’s where it is called Boatswain (and was just un-boxed and put on the shelf) or some such nonsense. The 22oz bomber pours clear copper with effervescent loose off white head. The aroma offers up pilsener malts, sugary malts and mineral notes. At this point I’m wondering if they neglected to add the hops. If I concentrate maybe there are vague faint hops in the background. The taste is sadly similar and disjointed and basically a mess. I get sugary sweet maybe pilsener like malts and vague to possibly floral bitter hops pulling apart the experience with the help of a mild but odd nonetheless mineral note. This just . . . well, not sure what this is.

2.2 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 7/20
A very poor example of an IPA. Taste is acceptable but instantly forgettable. Only positive is the cheap price.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Purchased as Boatswain American IPA. Gold color and tall white head. Mild hop aroma and hop flavor with a light malt base. This really is an’t bad at all, and I don’t understand the low scores.

2.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 11/20
Slightly copper coloured light amber body with a thick, two centimetre tall off-white head. Aroma of light grassy and herbal hops with a bit of malt and not much else. Light-bodied; Sharp metallic and earthy hop notes with some malt and a bitter metallic flavour tucked in. Aftertaste is quite bitter with a lot of grass and herbal notes and a bit of cardboardie funkiness as well. Overall, not such a great beer and not an IPA worth searching out for. I sampled this 65 cL bottle at what I thought was a deal at US$3.00 from Ridgeview Liqours in Green Bay, Wisconsin on 29-July-2012 sampled later in the day from my hotel room in Green Bay.

3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 13/20
Trader Joe’s Boatswain brand $2 for 22 oz.. Aroma is very slight, pours an ambery orange with a creamy, 1-2 inch head. Taste is pretty nice, mainly a bit of caramel, lightly sweet, a tiny bit oh hop bitterness. Very enjoyable, for $2.
The catch: it is supposed to be an IPA and, nice as it is, it is NOT a good example of an IPA. I am rarely near a Trader Joe’s, but I’ll probably buy this again when I happen to be in one. I’m a thrifty bastard with a strange sense of taste, so too bad if you disagree with my analysis.

2.4 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 9/20
Cheap from Trader Joe’s. Pours hazy copper amber with a decent head and a nice lace. Modest grassy hops aroma, a touch of bready malt. Flavor is light on the hops bitterness with a chewy bread malt that became stronger as the beer warmed. Light to medium body, moderate carbonation, slightly watery texture, and the bready malts linger in the finish. I was much less offended by this than others seem to have been. Not very IPAish, though.

El horible. Reminded me of high gravity malt liqueur. Luckily it was only $1.99. Shame for Trader Joe’s for trying to trick people into thinking this is a quality beer. MINHAS’D!.

2.2 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 2/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
Trader Joe’s clone, under "Boatswain American I.P.A." Pours a clear dark orange with a small amount of stark white head. Suspiciously little hops in the nose. Raisin, actually, which I noticed with the other Minhas beer I got from TJs. This is in no way an IPA, there is no flavor of hops, just a slight dark fruit sweetness that fades into an unsatisfying bitterness. At least it was only 2 bucks for the bomber.

2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
$2.99 @ Fresh’n’Easy: Labeled as "Underworld Brewing." I just sampled the double IPA so my bar has been lowered. No, this isn’t a vacation in Hawaii -- this isn’t limbo (the dance contest). The bar has been lowered, as it pertains to my tongue. So, I kinda like it. Actually, I get some notes of caramel and citrus in this one -- flavors I enjoy in beer. Accordingly, the aroma and taste is a notch above their double IPA. It’s a good thing I didn’t work through a taster of quintessentials at some beer festival. This rater would’ve found himself drunk, leaning way down to li-li-limboooo!
