2.5 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 11/20
Aroma is cereal, grainy, even a touch medicinal...There’s heavy booze right away, a lot of sugary sweetness, then mild hop bitterness in the finish. This is a very mild IPA at best. Body is too thick and sugary, not nearly enough hop flavor to be an IPA. Amber ale with a little kick is more like it...

Called Boatswain American IPA. Pour out of 22 oz bottle was clear orange-yellow with white head, aroma brought notes of some off biscuit and mineral notes, slight cardboard notes as well, hints of slight citrus but very faint. Taste was weak biscuit and bread with a slight stale note, hints of citrus as well finishing fairly dry with a touch of bitter. Not very good.

2.5 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
My stupid fucking friend picked out this beer. Never heard of Rhinelander, why not? A clear orange brown with about two fingers worth of head. Some heavy lacing. Some pine in the nose and a weird honey and malt. This tastes gross, some light hoppiness but mostly malt and a little honey. Light to medium mouthfeel, moderate carbonation, and a short finish. Bad beer, tastes really old but this is relatively new to shelves so I’m thinking it’s just a subpar beer.

2.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20
Bomber from Trader Joe’s Glen Allen, VA. Boatswain American IPA label. Pours a clear copper color with a medium sized off-white head. Decent head retention. Aroma of caramel malts and citrus hops. The taste is citrus hops and pale malts. Harsh and astringent. Thin-medium bodied with high carbonation.

Picked up at Trader Joe’s where it is called Boatswain (and was just un-boxed and put on the shelf) or some such nonsense. The 22oz bomber pours clear copper with effervescent loose off white head. The aroma offers up pilsener malts, sugary malts and mineral notes. At this point I’m wondering if they neglected to add the hops. If I concentrate maybe there are vague faint hops in the background. The taste is sadly similar and disjointed and basically a mess. I get sugary sweet maybe pilsener like malts and vague to possibly floral bitter hops pulling apart the experience with the help of a mild but odd nonetheless mineral note. This just . . . well, not sure what this is.

Sampled at an ebls tasting. Kind of pumpkin color. Clear and no head. Ph, not good. Bitter hops with little flavor. Some malt. Odd sourness.

The aroma is malty and hoppy with caramel and citrus/pine hops. The appearance is amber with a medium head. The taste is like the aroma with a bitter finish. The palate is average. Overall this is better than average but not great

I have been very impressed with the Mission Street beers from Trader Joe’s, so maybe we should talk about those instead.

2.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 9/20
Consumed under the moniker of Boatswain American IPA. Powdery, lightly sweet, nutty?, vague caramel aroma without much in the way of hops. Not an AIPA aroma at all, but OK. Standard US bomber, throwback label with 1800s typesetting. Clear, dark tea brown, an extemely clingy, thin, saltine-colored head. Metallic and overbrewed, moderately sweet. Medium body, loses carbo. *Weeps* - it was only $2.49 for 22oz! How can you screw that up?!?!? Trader Joe’s, Tallahassee.
