3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 13/20
Trader Joe’s Boatswain brand $2 for 22 oz.. Aroma is very slight, pours an ambery orange with a creamy, 1-2 inch head. Taste is pretty nice, mainly a bit of caramel, lightly sweet, a tiny bit oh hop bitterness. Very enjoyable, for $2.
The catch: it is supposed to be an IPA and, nice as it is, it is NOT a good example of an IPA. I am rarely near a Trader Joe’s, but I’ll probably buy this again when I happen to be in one. I’m a thrifty bastard with a strange sense of taste, so too bad if you disagree with my analysis.

2.5 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20
[Bottle (650ml). As ’Rhinelander Boatswain American IPA’] Pours a hazy dark orange-amber with an average size semi-lasting frothy off-white head. Minimal lacing. Aroma is fruity first, not very hoppy at all, along with caramel malt, sugar and notes of cardboard and bread -- we aren’t off to a good start. Sweet caramel malt flavour along with fruit, alcohol and a hint of hops. Light to average bitter finish. Average bodied. Really big disappointment (I’m not familiar with the brewery at all so I had no idea what to expect). Addendum: I want to add that I read that someone said it tastes like Malt Liquor and I can totally see that.

Not a huge IPA fan because they use too much Cascade. Even though they claim lots of hops, I don't see it being too hoppy. Very balanced flavor, low hop aroma. Very different flavor. Can't determine the hops they use.

1.5 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 5/20
Bottle. Deep Amber with a small head. Nose is very strongly malty. Loads of caramel. Toffee apple. Taste is pretty astringent. Harsh bitterness. More caramel. Weird. Full body, active carbonation. Terrible

1.6 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 1/5 OVERALL 5/20
Poured from 22 oz. bottle.
Murky, copper-orange with a 1-finger buff-colored head and fair lacing.
Aroma of caramel, toffee, toast, mild herbs and corn.
Taste of caramel, toffee, hay, toast and cane syrup with only bare hints of any hops.
Medium/full body and medium carbonation with a slimy mouthfeel.
A sweet, malty brew that bares little resemblance to an IPA (or to any other respectable beer for that matter). Just dreadful. Maybe it will work as a drain cleaner.

1.6 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 5/20
Bottled as Boatswain American IPA, purchased at Trader Joe’s. Dark amber in color with a tiny, light white head. Bland caramel nose with a bit of toast. Grainy, dried grass and straw flavor, slightly sweet and mildly sour. Hops are earthy and seem old. Abrasive carbonation. Poor.

Fiercely hopped and hopped again? I have only been tasting craft beer for about 2 years but I don’t think there are any hops here. There’s plenty of sugar and malt. I will say this: if a 40 ounce of king cobra is $1.07 and this is $2 for a bomber, it is twice as good as king cobra. If they were holding an IPA contest on the corner of my block, and no one else showed up, it would win.

Save your time and money. The beer is horrible. It’s cheap for a reason. No quality. ALL THE BEER is watery dish-water. Sure, one can buy this from Trader Joe’s for a low price, but really, what you get is nothing on par to quality. I’d rather put the extra money towards a pint or six pack of something more proven and worthwhile. This beer is made cheap for a reason and its to sell out. The owners, both non brew-masters by the way, just some trust fund rich kids, are slinging this dishwater to steal your money. I mean go on the website, it shows the guy walking out of his Escalade SUV and the interviews with him and the sister "co-owner" show the trust fund babies they are...both siblings are narcissistic and ridiculous. I would give this a zero rating if I could.

2.2 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 8/20
Bomber. Unclear dirty brownish orange, feeble tan foam mostly lasts. Orange floral c-malt vegetal smell. Taste is malt forward, lighter roast, sweet caramel, mildly floral and herbal, with an odd, short lived orange grapefruit tang. Softer carbonation, light-medium bodied, moderately hopped. Another disappointing mediocre effort from this brewer. NFL (Not For Lagerboys)

Amber colored pour. Small off white head. Little bit of lacing. A small hint of hops under a muted malt aroma. Taste is vegetal with a carbonic finish.

"Not bad. above average (for them) but really, that’s not saying much. Overly malty for my tastes and thereefore light on the hops. As an english pale? OK. As an american IPA, I’ll pass, even at $2.50 per bomber..."
