3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Passable stout at Mondial 2009. Very common stout, without anything too interesting in characteristics.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
2009-06-05. Black body with a nice beige head that fades fast. (3+) Aroma has a good dose of dark roast that comes in waves. (6+) Flavour is lighter than expected, roasty highlights are bitter, but muted. Base malt offers little depth in support of the roast. Average palate feels thin for a stout. Okay. Bottle at Mondial 2009, Montreal

2.2 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 8/20
33 cl bottle thanks to Ingo! Sampled on April 8, 2013. Marked (BB?) 13.01.30, purchased late December 2012.
Dark reddish brown color, big brown head. Acidic, roasted scent, coffee as well, way too acidic. Acidic, roasted, thin taste, not pleasant. Thin mouthfeel, low bitterness.
Did not finish my pour.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Keg(?), BeerFest Daisen, Japan, 23/09/11. Deep pitch with a sinking tan swell of foam. Attractive chocolatey aroma with mocha, ash, aniseed, maybe After Eights deep in the mix. Finely sieved, silky with a good chew of well-done malt, coffee splashes, milk chocolate and roasted fennel seed impressions. Has some of the coalsmoke and dark, compressed vegetal character of an English stout. Ichiban!

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle. Pours a very dark chestnut brown with a moderate tan head that collapses to a persistent skim. Aroma is of burnt wheat crackers, like Triscuits that have been left in the oven too long. Flavour is very charred and ashy, with underlying bitter coffee and chocolate. The malts here are very burnt, and very bitter, and there is little sweetness to balance it out.
ADDENDUM: Hah! I finished rating this, then proceeded to peel the label (yes, I’m a loser and keep all the labels) and read the script on the front: "This smooth and creamy dark beer is skillfully conditioned to avoid bitterness...". I absolutely did not find this to be the case!
