2.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20
Muddy dark brown. Chocolatey, fudgey aroma. Fruity-tart body with roast and light smoke. A little bit of burnt fruit in there as well. Light bodied and easy-going for the style.

2.9 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
Growler… Cloudy, dark brown ale with a small, creamy, khaki head. The nose is grainy, corny and lightly nutty with a hint of chocolate. Medium to full-bodied and oily with lazy carbonation. The flavor is grainy, but pretty bold – vanilla latte and toffee notes. Finishes mostly sweet, but also provides lingering bitterness. Bottle courtesy of JW77!

2.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 11/20
JW77 with the growler. Dark brown, tan head. Aroma is quite roasty and toasty. This beer drinks much more like a standard porter than an imperial stout. Very roasted flavor, thin mouthfeel, and a charred flavor. Not that impressive.

2.4 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 9/20
UPDATED: JAN 18, 2009 My Bottom Line:
This slightly problematic Imperial Stout’s roasted and caramel malt flavors were undermined by an obsessive fruitiness and its nagging tartness, verging on pickled asperities.
Further Personal Perceptions:
-A ring of foam circumnavigates the dark brown gown.
-Alcohol doesn’t appear much in the flavor profile, which is nice.
-Cheese is perceived in the nose as well.
-The fruitiness doesn’t necessarily emulate any specific fruit as it slashes through what the malts are attempting to do.
-With so many good examples of the style in the USA, this becomes even more disappointing. Let’s hope this bad bottle is just a rogue.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Sampled from a growler courtesy of BBB63: Pours a very dark brown, nearly opaque, with a thin off-white head. Mild sweet caramel malt and milk chocolate aroma. Body has a nice malty sweetness and dry earthy finish with a sweet mocha roastiness. A nice imperial stout, but needs a little more balance and complexity. Thanks Mike for sharing the growler!

3.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
UPDATED: OCT 28, 2006 Tap. Dark molasses, coffee and alcohol aroma. Dark brown-black color with small head. Initially a slightly sweet prune flavor followed by mocha/coffee, hops and finally a tingling alcohol burn to finish. Smooth and well blended - just not be strong enough for some. I liked the fact that it didn’t have as strong of an alcohol flavor as others in the style I’ve tried.

2.8 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
Pours dark brown with a tan head. Smells of bitter malt, pepper, some molasses, chocolate, roasted malt. Tastes overly bitter with some residual sugary hints on the finish.

2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 12/20
Pours deep amber with thin tan head. The aroma has modest notes of dark fruity esters, some caramel malts and brown sugar. The taste is smooth and very light for the style. I get light notes of dark fruity esters, some mildly roasted malts, earthiness, a bit of caramel malts and an underlining brown sugar like sweetness.

1.3 AROMA 2/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 2/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 5/20
A completely off bottle whose main quality was its low price at 4.99 a bomber. This bottle bought in Indianapolis in September 2008 displayed flaw after flaw starting with vinegary/tart eggs sulphuriness, a blatant lack of roastiness and a lasting dill finish. Completely off.
