Draught at Ginger Man, NYC. Golden/amber beer with a small offwhite head. Malty toffee aroma, fruity, roasted, some hay. Malty vinous flavor, fruity, grapes, hay some spices. A bit thin.

Bottle from Monument in Concord, CA. Pours a clear amber with a decent off-white head. Aromas of honey, malt and a little hop. Medium body with sharpish carbonation that turns creamy. Flavor is caramel, nutty and some bitter. Seems fairly balanced. Rather crisp, apparently with grassy hop.

Bottle shared by Butters at Slutfest 2.0. Pours clear copper with a medium, frothy off-white head, medium-long retention with good lacing. Aroma is heavy malt (caramel, toast, bread), light hops (earthy), and clean lager character with notes of dates. Flavor is heavy malt (caramel, toast, bread), light hops (earthy), and clean lager character with notes of dates. Medium body and carbonation, light warmth and a dry finish.

Bomber shared by Butters at Butters Slutfest 2.0, Richmond, VA, 4.23.11. Pours a hazy brownish tan color with a thin creamy head. Fair head retention and lacing. Malty caramel aroma with a tart finish. The taste is caramel, toffee and a bitter hop finish. Medium bodied.

Bottle… Clear, textbook amber ale with a small, creamy, white head. Very nice retention. Nutty, malty, toffee aroma. Medium-bodied with a milky mouthfeel and modest carbonation. The flavor leans just a touch on the sweet side of balance – toffee, nuts, biscuit, sufficient hops. Finishes lightly sweet and biscuity.

Tap at Hamilton’s. Clear light amber beer. Aroma is of herbal hops, very light fruity esters and a soft toasty/herbal maltiness. Fairly nutty palate with a touch of dusty herbal hoppiness. It’s got all of the right characteristics, but it’s a bit on the thin side. Soft bitterness, fairly clean tasting. OK, but not among the better interpretations.

Sample at the brewery. It is a good altbier. Overly hopped but in a good way. Unexpectedly good.

Draught Good off-white head over hazy amber-gold beer. Malt, lightly coloured malts, green hops (and not EU ones). Sulphur-y. Faint bitterish-toasted flavour. Hops are in evidence, but not really in balance with the main malt flavour. Warming up, sulphur gone, in exchange for nice nutbread flavour. Aftertaste is surprisingly dry-bitterish, some hopoils that are not bad. BIt sticky. Deserving, but still... I think somebody ought to catch the trolley to Düsseldorf, instead of USA-written cookbooks.
