COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The ancient legends that abound the Russian Imperial Stout of yore are filled with tempestuous romance, sinful thievery, and scurvy, too. So highly regarded was this historic recipe, the Russian Kings tried to keep it all to themselves. They failed. Today we bring you our own dastardly dark version, with a rich and roasty aroma, notes of plum and port and a velvety texture so luscious it just might make a grown man weep.

ALLOVATE (2333) - Perth, AUSTRALIA - MAY 7, 2013
Cellar temperature and into a snifter. Appearance of used motor oil. Muddy brown-trimmed black with no head. Smoky and peaty is the initial waft from the glass. Nuances of Bovril, kelp, cocoa powder, dank weeds, leather and topsoil fill it out, giving a uniqueness. Sticky, sweet and rounded on the palate. Rich, caramelised and burnt sugars, charred stonefruit, leather, bitter dark chocolate and bonfire ash sum it up nicely. Carbonation is prickly, the finish oily and viscous. Not huge in body but it is definitely well rounded. The burnt malt notes dominate the palate giving it a hefty bitterness that lasts long between each sip. A little cloying by the end. Alcohol is masked way to well which is a shame as it does need that warmth. Overall it is an Impy and that is all. Average! (12fl.Oz., no date stamp, Cellarbrations Carlisle)

12 ounce bottle bought a year ago at Bine & Vine ($3.49). First rating for this local brewery. Pours pitch black with one finger of quite dark brown foam. Aroma of grainy roasted malts, lots of dark chocolate, vanilla, roasted nuts, and coffee. Flavor of creamy but bittersweet chocolate, smoky dark roasted malts, fudge, rich caramel, vanilla marshmallow, some dark sticky fruit, and moderate roast coffee. Smooth and surprisingly soft on the palate for such a big beer. The high ABV is completely hidden. Quite a good rendition of the style...I think the year of aging helped, too. (168, 789)

Bottle. Black with a brown head that fades to less than a coat. Aroma is roasty with coffee, chocolate and treacle, blackberries and licorice. Oily, low carbonation. Fudgy sweet with coffee, coffee, dark roast that struggles a little to break through the sweetness, bright hoppy citrus flavours that lighten things towards the end. More of that and/or less leaden sweetness would be good, but pretty good.

Bottle thanks to my brother for my birthday! Pours an opaque black with thin ring of tan lace that doesnít really stick. Aroma was grant on the booze or of the gate, but as it warmed chocolate and roasted malt came out nicely. Taste was chocolate with no real hint of the booze, coffee as it warmed up. Nice, nothing crazy but definitely solid.

Pours pitch black with a very dark tan head. Nose shows heavy complex roast with loads of coffee. Also some soft booze. Equally rich flavours, with lots more coffee and heavy roasted malt. Some noticeable booze. Carbonation could be higher.

Bottle. Head is initially small, frothy, dark brown, mostly lasting. Body is opaque black (flashlight tested). Aroma is moderately to heavily malty (dark chocolate, fudge, roasted grain, cookie, caramel, coffee), lightly to hoppy (grapefruit), with notes of vanilla, alcohol, light notes of currant and blackberry. Flavor is heavily sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is moderately sweet, lightly acidic, moderately bitter. Medium to full body, creamy/velvety texture, lively carbonation, moderately to heavily alcoholic. This has a surprising amount of bottle-to-bottle variance (this is my fifth sampling), but on the whole itís a wonderful rendition. Tons of malt presence and depth, but the hops and berryish notes are not drowned out...so itís not only rich and enticing, but fairly complex too. Some bottles seem more hoppy and some are a bit less vibrant, but that may be due to the bottle conditioning variances, and in the end itís always in the high 3s to near 4. The only real complaint I have is that itís quite sweet...although itís still quite drinkable, more bitterness would be desirable to clean up the finish better.

355ml bottle. Pours an opaque black, with a small and rapidly diminishing dark tan head. Earthy, savoury malt mixes with plum, liquorice and faint alcohol in the aroma. Mild herbal hops up front are soon overcome by smooth plum, which leads into a rich blend of port, faint liquorice and bittersweet dark chocolate. A mild Scotch whisky flavour comes in at the finish, which leaves a warming aftertaste. This is very fine imperial stout, with the rich, full body and subtle complexity that the style demands. Very good.
