The ancient legends that abound the Russian Imperial Stout of yore are filled with tempestuous romance, sinful thievery, and scurvy, too. So highly regarded was this historic recipe, the Russian Kings tried to keep it all to themselves. They failed. Today we bring you our own dastardly dark version, with a rich and roasty aroma, notes of plum and port and a velvety texture so luscious it just might make a grown man weep.

Aroma of burnt sugars, malts, some minor coffee notes. Pours blacker than Satanís heart with the darkest tan head Iíve seen. Wow. The taste. This is easily the freshest, tastiest stout Iíve had in a long time. The coffee notes are very subtle here with a big focus on the chocolates and brown sugars. Definitely not the most complex stout as other reviewers have noted, however the simplicity is really what makes this one great. Definitely does not taste like 9.8% abv (I honestly canít even taste the alcohol) which could be a dangerous game during the summer with a few in the back yard!

Bottle from South Bay Liquor: Upon opening the bottle, an instant olfaction of dark chocolate, coffee, and roast malts filled my nose and made my mouth begin to salivate. Even looking at the dark black liquid fill the glass with a fat creamy of head made it more enticing. The flavor is robust with a rich dark taste of chocolate milk that leaves behind a bitter finish of chocolate. By far the best Mission beer Iíve come across so far.

12 oz bottle into a pint glass. A: Pours a pitch black color. The head is a one finger tan shade - retention isnít the best, but the soft and creamy texture it has make me forgive that. Not much lacing is left behind. S: Quite chocolaty in general. There are slight hints of coffee, as well, but this is mostly chocolate, roast, and brown sugar. And thatís not a bad thing at all. Maybe it doesnít have the depth of other imperial stouts, but whatís here works quite well. T: There are some slight chocolaty hints, not only to start, but on the finish as well. In general, though, this one is roasty. Not oppressively so - it does end in a slightly sweet fashion - but it does enough to cleanse the palate of excess sweetness. There are also some coffee-ish hints, along with a bit of alcohol and licorice (usually the bane of imperial stouts for me.) Just like with the nose, it isnít the most complex imperial stout on the market. However, itís still quite enjoyable that does a good job of bringing the traits I like within the style. M: Itís not the driest imperial stout, nor is it the sweetest. Rather, it strikes a neutral balance between the two. Make no mistake, in spite of its full body, itís quite drinkable for a 10% RIS, and despite the alcohol flavor, there isnít much booze to be felt on the palate. O: Not a top-tier RIS, but certainly a very good one. It has to compete with the likes of Old Rasputin, though, and that makes this one a hard sell for yours truly. Still, Iíd have no trouble drinking this one again.

Caramel and roasted malt. It also has some pretty good alcohol notes and a little coffee.

Pours very dark with a tiny mocha head which is very appealing. Dark chocolate with a little roast and slightly bitter sweet finish which I like. Donít know the price because it was a shipment from a beer club but Iíd happily pay $9 for it if you see it.

Pours a jet black color with a short lived dark brown head. The aroma is of dark chocolate, and roasted coffee. The flavor is of dark chocolate and coffee. The body was full with a sweet and bitter aftertaste. Overall a great beer.

12 oz bottle. Pours deep black, with a long-lasting tan head that leaves good lacing. Nose is dark roast malt and chocolate. Taste is dark roast malt and dark fruit, with a long finish and slightly oily mouthfeel. Hides the alcohol well. A very good Imperial Stout.

On tap at Twisted Jimmyís. Chocolate, coffee, light smoke; oaky with vanilla. Peated barley and alcohol vapor. Rich Tootsie Roll, beany soy tang. Dark black opaque with cocoa-tan thin creamy lacing head. Medium-heavy chewy body with medium carbonation. Starts pretty sweet with chocolate, coffee, and light peat, soy. Mild carbonic acidity, alcohol warming with medium bitter nutty finish. Sweet after but short of cloying. Warming finish.

Aromas of olives and tires with a a hint of cherry and chocolates - a bit on the acidic side. Heavily oaky and earthy flavor, and incredibly thick. Lingers on the palate for days. Meant to be drank by Russian Tzars and swashbuckling pirates ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Rich roasted chocolate aroma. Pours thick and dark with a tan head. Good balanced flavors, sweet finish and the alcohol content is masked well.
