The ancient legends that abound the Russian Imperial Stout of yore are filled with tempestuous romance, sinful thievery, and scurvy, too. So highly regarded was this historic recipe, the Russian Kings tried to keep it all to themselves. They failed. Today we bring you our own dastardly dark version, with a rich and roasty aroma, notes of plum and port and a velvety texture so luscious it just might make a grown man weep.

Forgive me as I go into pirate mode. Bottle be from Ales boy Mail. Blacker than the soul of Blackbeard pour with no head. Arrromas of licorice, dark roast coffee and dark chocolate. Flavours of coffee, molasses, black cherries, licorice toffee, black treacle and darrrk chocolate. It be as vinous as the finest rum from the Indies. Throat warming, velvety feel. Noice.

Aroma is fig, deep deep chocolate and mocha. Slight roastiness and rich malts. Taste is similar to aroma with very chewy mouthfeel with chocolate, raisins and molasses dominating the senses. Finishes with slight bitterness and surprisingly almost no liquor snap for a 10% beer. Appearance is jet black with a beige head that retains fairly well.

Bottle: Thanks Hackobock: Served in a Chouffe glass: Meeium sized dark beige to light brown head. Pitch black beer. Aromas of bay leaf, meat, roast, dark chocolate, malt and some wood roast, fresh wood roast, (sweet) coal, liquorice. Classic! Flavour has loads of roast with a good amount of bitters, coffee, herbal roast, wood and malt roast, some coffee, some bay leaf, some light liquorice, tar, coal, blackest liquorice extracts.. Heavy but good! Aftertaste is bitter, roast, liquorice, dark chocolate, malt roast and some sweet tar. Low carbo, creamy almost silky mouthfeel, full bodied and a creamy texture. Another awesome no nonesense Imperial Stout! Very good stuff!

Bottle: Super dark, inky black & oily pour. Gluggs out slowly, velvety mocha foam on top that skims quickly to a bubbly collar. Aroma of dense fudge brownies, chocolate syrup, figs, a hint of roast, & a little undercurrent of residual sweetness, bordering on cream. More dark chocolate in the aroma, very bittersweet with a balance of roasted malts & some unattenuated sugars. Hint of oxidation, dark fruit, fudge, & a bit of heavily roasted coffee beans that linger on the palate in the aftertaste. Creamy, big-ass mouth feel. Wasn’t expecting much from this, but it’s pretty damn tasty.

"Not HUGE for an RIS, but pretty agressive flavor and aroma. The body is medium for the style, especially. Malted chocolate, dark fruit and a decent amount of bitterness."
