The ancient legends that abound the Russian Imperial Stout of yore are filled with tempestuous romance, sinful thievery, and scurvy, too. So highly regarded was this historic recipe, the Russian Kings tried to keep it all to themselves. They failed. Today we bring you our own dastardly dark version, with a rich and roasty aroma, notes of plum and port and a velvety texture so luscious it just might make a grown man weep.

This beer pours black with a medium khaki head that diminishes slowly to an outer ring. Partial rings of lacing on the glass. Aroma of dark chocolate and roasted malt. Full-bodied with a roasty character and flavors of charred malt, chocolate and a bit of licorice. The finish is slightly smoky with a dark chocolate and malt aftertaste. Pretty good all around.

Bricks (796) - Delaware, USA - FEB 6, 2013
Jet black, dark tan fizzy small head. Abrasive, roasted malt aroma with maybe a hint of vanilla. Stout is very smooth, with some excusable alcohol burn on the finish. Taste is a little brash, simplistic, with some molasses, more alcohol, and some roasted malt... it almost seems a bit salty. Itís a very good, but not great stout.

GIJOE (1000) - North Berwick, Maine, USA - FEB 2, 2013
Pours from the bomber into my snifter black and oily like the Exxon Valdez; this cappuccino looking head that disappears quickly leaving a slight ring around the side. Nearly no lacing. Heavy, dark, worty essence: roasted malt, burnt toffee, cereal, and tobacco in the nose and flavor. Full body, creamy mouthfeel with soft carbonation fading rapidly to nearly flat. Light and pleasant bitterness that lingers long in the aftertaste. Not an OMG! beer, but imminently drinkable. At 9.8%, not exactly sessionable, unless youíve trained on Russian vodka like me!

Opaque black oily pour, with only a hint of ruby fringes. The head diminishes quickly to a flat appearance; no real lacing of which to speak. The nose is of malt, caramel and tobacco. The flavors are similar, of toasted caramel, roasts, grains, toasted bread crust, dark pitted fruits, some vanilla and tons of nicely burnt toffee. The body is full, with a creamy mouthfeel that is semi burnt and active on the palate. Very complex and substantial, this is a great winter warmer.

Draft. Pours deep black with small coffee colored head. Lacing pretty much surrounded the entire inner glass down to the beer line. Aromas and flavor of roasted malt, coffee, rich chocolate, port wine, and a touch of hoppiness to compliment the sweet and rich flavors. As it warmed it developed a huge fig and plum profile mixed in with some roasty peat booze. Very warming, medium to fuller body for a RIS.

Bottle - dark pour as expected, with medium tan head. Taste is chocolate and plums. Solid easy drinking RIS. Has very nice aftertaste that lingers awhile.

Very black, very thick tan head, recedes and leaves some thick tan clingy stuff. Nose is big and mostly chocolate with some plums. Palate is velvety and full and rich. Ends with a roasted feel. A bit strong , not the smoothest I have had but complex and full. Tastes include dark fruit, chocolate, a touch of coffee. Pretty good.
