The ancient legends that abound the Russian Imperial Stout of yore are filled with tempestuous romance, sinful thievery, and scurvy, too. So highly regarded was this historic recipe, the Russian Kings tried to keep it all to themselves. They failed. Today we bring you our own dastardly dark version, with a rich and roasty aroma, notes of plum and port and a velvety texture so luscious it just might make a grown man weep.

12 oz bottle. Inky brown with dark tan frosting. Nose is cocoa, smoky prune and salty licorice. Creamy medium body with a sharp alcohol bite. Taste is woody blackberry, dark roast and bittersweet chocolate with a lingering, slightly sour, red wine note that adds a nice layer of complexity.

UPDATED: JUL 28, 2013 Very tasty dark and complex russian stout. I really enjoyed the smooth and rich mouthfeel and found it very easy to drink. Nice flavors of coffee and dark chocolate mixed with ripe fruit. The alcohol is so well hidden that you would never know this was a 9.8% ABV beer.

From 355 ml bottle. One of the darkest beers I’ve ever seen. Solid black, no light coming through at all with a dark brown head. Aromas of aniseed, prunes, dates, figs and chocolate. The taste starts out with smooth milk chocolate and dark fruit before a robust espresso/dark chocolate bitterness comes through. Lingering, rich chocolatey finish. Thick but velvety smooth body. Awesome.

650ml bottle pours black in color with a finger of brown head that leaves some spotted lacing behind. Aroma is dark fruits (wine grapes and/or prunes) with roasted grains and chocolate. Taste is a roasted grain bitterness with a chocolate malty sweetness and a red wine grape dry finish. Also, has a hint of brandy. Medium to heavy bodied with some decent carbonation. A rich and complex Imperial stout that begs to be sampled. Well done.

A nice body, nice head, starts out like a very nice rich stout, but the "roasty" malt is just a little too toasty, with hints of burnt, which kills it for me.

Pours a three finger brown head that fades slowly leaving some lace. Black as midnight, no highlights. Good carbonation and heavy bodied. Baked chocolate and some coffee nose. Flavor is sweet baked chocolate and some black liquorice, the 9.8% ABV is hidden. Decent RIS. 12oz bottle from Gift Specialists Oceanside, California.
