The ancient legends that abound the Russian Imperial Stout of yore are filled with tempestuous romance, sinful thievery, and scurvy, too. So highly regarded was this historic recipe, the Russian Kings tried to keep it all to themselves. They failed. Today we bring you our own dastardly dark version, with a rich and roasty aroma, notes of plum and port and a velvety texture so luscious it just might make a grown man weep.

Caramel and roasted malt. It also has some pretty good alcohol notes and a little coffee.

Pours very dark with a tiny mocha head which is very appealing. Dark chocolate with a little roast and slightly bitter sweet finish which I like. Don’t know the price because it was a shipment from a beer club but I’d happily pay $9 for it if you see it.

Pours a jet black color with a short lived dark brown head. The aroma is of dark chocolate, and roasted coffee. The flavor is of dark chocolate and coffee. The body was full with a sweet and bitter aftertaste. Overall a great beer.

12 oz bottle. Pours deep black, with a long-lasting tan head that leaves good lacing. Nose is dark roast malt and chocolate. Taste is dark roast malt and dark fruit, with a long finish and slightly oily mouthfeel. Hides the alcohol well. A very good Imperial Stout.

On tap at Twisted Jimmy’s. Chocolate, coffee, light smoke; oaky with vanilla. Peated barley and alcohol vapor. Rich Tootsie Roll, beany soy tang. Dark black opaque with cocoa-tan thin creamy lacing head. Medium-heavy chewy body with medium carbonation. Starts pretty sweet with chocolate, coffee, and light peat, soy. Mild carbonic acidity, alcohol warming with medium bitter nutty finish. Sweet after but short of cloying. Warming finish.

Aromas of olives and tires with a a hint of cherry and chocolates - a bit on the acidic side. Heavily oaky and earthy flavor, and incredibly thick. Lingers on the palate for days. Meant to be drank by Russian Tzars and swashbuckling pirates ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Rich roasted chocolate aroma. Pours thick and dark with a tan head. Good balanced flavors, sweet finish and the alcohol content is masked well.

Pour is black with a small tan lacing. Aroma is of dark fruits, red wine, coffee, earth, and roast. Flavor is similar but with more coffee and cocoa added in. Slight booze on the end.

12oz bottle. No date. Opaque, black, viscous pour, with thin mocha head. Dessert like aromas of milk chocolate, vanilla cream, roasted marshmallows and coffee. Yum! Mouthfeel is a touch more carbonated then expected at first, though not terrible.. I personally think this would be even better with lower carbonation. Body is medium-plus to full-bodied, with a long finish. Flavors of roasted grain, dark chocolate, cocoa powder, bitter bakers chocolate, dark fruit, raisin, and vanilla linger on the palate. Pretty delicious stuff. Recommendable. --- tasted while on a long journey to understand the world around me...

Poured from a large bottle into a pint glass to drink. The beer had a fairly thick pour with a deep, solid black color without a hue, and a thinner, creamy, dark tan head that had shorter retention, with minimal cling, but good lacing. It had a rich, roasty aroma with strong notes of chocolate, plum, port, and some licorice and molasses. The taste was a strong sweet and bitter blend with a heavy roasty presence and flavors of coffee, chocolate, port, deep fruits, and some licorice and sugar. Its body was full and creamy with good carbonation and a thick, syrupy mouthfeel with a wet character. Thank you Siobhan for the Christmas present!
