The ancient legends that abound the Russian Imperial Stout of yore are filled with tempestuous romance, sinful thievery, and scurvy, too. So highly regarded was this historic recipe, the Russian Kings tried to keep it all to themselves. They failed. Today we bring you our own dastardly dark version, with a rich and roasty aroma, notes of plum and port and a velvety texture so luscious it just might make a grown man weep.

Bottle at the ChrisO Flags of Many Nations Easter Tasting - London. Big thanks to K-Bird for this impy stout. Pours oily black with a fine, light brown cream head. Charred-roasted malt nose, some burnt marshmallow. Medium to big sweet flavor with cocoa, moderate roast, faint raisins and other dark fruits, light alcohol, char. Medium to full bodied with average, creamy carbonation. Warming finish with further charred malts, light burnt meat, dark chocolate, burnt earth bitterness, dark sugars. Nice.

On tap at Taps in Petaluma. Pours a dark black color with a thick brown head. Good well balanced hop, roasted malt with some sweetness. Not too bitter.

Pour out of 22 oz bottle, thick oil black pour with brownie, dark chocolate colored head, nice looking, thin and lacing. Aroma brought big notes of baker’s chocolate, espresso, green coffee bean, slight dark fruits, plums, figs, hints of a slight anise note in there as well, slight touch of roast. Taste is a mix of dark chocolate, espresso, astringent coffee, bitter roast moving into slight dark fruits, anise, very slight molasses note, finishing fairly bitter, dry, more bitter chocolate. Very nicely done.

Pours dark with a ring of tan foam. Aroma is roasted chocolate and toasted malt. Taste is soy sauce, chocolate, roasted malt, and licorice. Light to medium body. Decent.

Deepest dark brown, almost black. A mocha head which dissipates quickly to leave a brown ring of lace. Probably served too cold, but strong aromas of plum, aniseed and coffee bean. Thick and milky, strong strong dark chocolate and coffee bean bitterness. Christmas cake fruits, plum, raisin and brown sugar, this is a real treat of a stout. The alcohol is warming, but not unpleasant, it lets you know it's there. The finish is warm and bitter, the thick milky body coats the mouth and leaves you wanting more ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

I absolutely loved this. Looks great, has a thick black color with dark tan head. The flavor is chewy and thick, yet it doesn’t make you feel fat. I could drink this all the time. A home run.

Pours black with thin tan head and some lace. Aroma is roasted malts, chocolate, dark coffee, taste follows suit with aroma well and alcohol peeks through as it warms. lively carbonation, sticky finish

Cellar temperature and into a snifter. Appearance of used motor oil. Muddy brown-trimmed black with no head. Smoky and peaty is the initial waft from the glass. Nuances of Bovril, kelp, cocoa powder, dank weeds, leather and topsoil fill it out, giving a uniqueness. Sticky, sweet and rounded on the palate. Rich, caramelised and burnt sugars, charred stonefruit, leather, bitter dark chocolate and bonfire ash sum it up nicely. Carbonation is prickly, the finish oily and viscous. Not huge in body but it is definitely well rounded. The burnt malt notes dominate the palate giving it a hefty bitterness that lasts long between each sip. A little cloying by the end. Alcohol is masked way to well which is a shame as it does need that warmth. Overall it is an Impy and that is all. Average! (12fl.Oz., no date stamp, Cellarbrations Carlisle)

12 ounce bottle bought a year ago at Bine & Vine ($3.49). First rating for this local brewery. Pours pitch black with one finger of quite dark brown foam. Aroma of grainy roasted malts, lots of dark chocolate, vanilla, roasted nuts, and coffee. Flavor of creamy but bittersweet chocolate, smoky dark roasted malts, fudge, rich caramel, vanilla marshmallow, some dark sticky fruit, and moderate roast coffee. Smooth and surprisingly soft on the palate for such a big beer. The high ABV is completely hidden. Quite a good rendition of the style...I think the year of aging helped, too. (168, 789)
