The ancient legends that abound the Russian Imperial Stout of yore are filled with tempestuous romance, sinful thievery, and scurvy, too. So highly regarded was this historic recipe, the Russian Kings tried to keep it all to themselves. They failed. Today we bring you our own dastardly dark version, with a rich and roasty aroma, notes of plum and port and a velvety texture so luscious it just might make a grown man weep.

22 ounce bottle purchased at Bel Air in Woodland, CA. The aroma is relatively mild and unassuming. Light sweetness with a little toffee and chocolate. Not much else present. Virtually opaque black body with a small, weak quickly dissipating brownish head. Starts with a bit of a roasted maltiness, becomes a little sweet in the middle. Finishes with really charry, burnt astringent bitterness. Very burnt and very dry. Hard to drink.

A nearly perfect Russian Imperial Stout. The only problem is a slightly soapy aftertaste. May be a fluke bottle.

Pours a very dark brown, nigh black, with a fairly thin tan head. Malty aroma with hints of vanilla. Taste is rich, smooth, and complex, like a good imperial stout should be. Notes of vanilla, coffee, and chocolate. A little sweet. This is very drinkable and is a solid example of the style. Thumbs up!

12 oz bottle. From alesbymail.co.uk.
This was behind my advent calendar door #19. Pitch black colour with a small mid-brown head. Roasted malt, vanilla, chocolate and mild alcohol in the aroma. The flavour is roasted malt, alcohol, dessert wine and coffee. Very rich. Nice brew.

On tap at Three Sheets. It pours black with a light brown head. The aroma has nice notes of chocolate and graham cracker with lighter coffee. The flavor is graham cracker, coffee and chocolate. A tad harsh on the palate as the alcohol is pretty noticeable along with heavy roast. The finish is a bit clunky, but overall it’s a pretty competent imperial stout.

From a bottle from the brewery. Pours dark brown with a thick, fizzy tan head. Smells like booze, chocolate, roasted malt, and some burnt coffee. Tastes like burnt coffee, burnt toast, ash, booze, and roasted malt. Light/medium body and low carbonation.
