The ancient legends that abound the Russian Imperial Stout of yore are filled with tempestuous romance, sinful thievery, and scurvy, too. So highly regarded was this historic recipe, the Russian Kings tried to keep it all to themselves. They failed. Today we bring you our own dastardly dark version, with a rich and roasty aroma, notes of plum and port and a velvety texture so luscious it just might make a grown man weep.

Bottle: Super dark, inky black & oily pour. Gluggs out slowly, velvety mocha foam on top that skims quickly to a bubbly collar. Aroma of dense fudge brownies, chocolate syrup, figs, a hint of roast, & a little undercurrent of residual sweetness, bordering on cream. More dark chocolate in the aroma, very bittersweet with a balance of roasted malts & some unattenuated sugars. Hint of oxidation, dark fruit, fudge, & a bit of heavily roasted coffee beans that linger on the palate in the aftertaste. Creamy, big-ass mouth feel. Wasnít expecting much from this, but itís pretty damn tasty.

"Not HUGE for an RIS, but pretty agressive flavor and aroma. The body is medium for the style, especially. Malted chocolate, dark fruit and a decent amount of bitterness."

Black, lacy tan head. Bittersweet chocolate, raisins, dark bread crusts, cocoa, resiny bitterness, easy drinking for an imperial stout.

This deep black beer has a tiny milk chocolate colored head. Fruity almost brandy like notes come through and it has the flavor of chocolate covered cherries. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Draft. Black with creamy light brown head. Dark Roasty. Lots of coffee. Dark bitter chocolate. Moderate burnt roasty bitterness. Pretty burnt. Ashtray. Good, but missing some balance for my liking.

Aroma: 5/10. Ashes, like faint cigar. Very little nose on this one. Appearance: 5/5. Pours an inky motor oil black with the darkest brown head Iíve ever seen. Taste: 7/10. Initial hit of black licorice and ashes, fading into a nice chocolate. Medium hoppy bitter for a stout, a little dryer than expeceted. Palate: 5/5. Smooth, sweet, cloys just a little like milk, with a long, peasant chocolate finish that lingers with a thread of ashy coffee. Overall: 14/20. Not bad at all. A nice mixture of ash and chocolate, a nice accompaniment to cookies or sweets.
