The ancient legends that abound the Russian Imperial Stout of yore are filled with tempestuous romance, sinful thievery, and scurvy, too. So highly regarded was this historic recipe, the Russian Kings tried to keep it all to themselves. They failed. Today we bring you our own dastardly dark version, with a rich and roasty aroma, notes of plum and port and a velvety texture so luscious it just might make a grown man weep.

Draft to mini goblet at Aces and Ales Tenaya. Pours black with a coffee icecream head. Aroma is semisweet chocolate, coffee, molasses. Flavor has all that, followed by some cpgrassy bitterness.

Thick black pour with a nice tan head that diminished pretty quickly .... Aroma is of dark chocolate, roasted malts, licorice and coffee .... Taste is bitter and of dark chocolate, roasted coffee and malts, light licorice and a nice dry and lightly bitter finish..... Has an abrupt and dry roasted bitter finish ... Abv hidden very well...... Very solid imperial stout

Flaske: Kulsort øl, klar og ikke olieret. Duften er chokolade og så lidt mere chokolade.Smagen er dog behagelig frisk og bliver ikke for sød eller chokoladet. Superbalanceret og meget lækker.

Bottle, shared with Robbie & Parksy post-RBAG 2014. Hearty near-black with red-brown highlights. Highly roasty, a bit of soy sauce, bitter chocolate, low residual sugars. Quite nice.

Only the 4th Imperial Stout I’ve ever tasted but, sorry to say, it’s the worst of my list. Had a lasting bitter coffee taste that just wouldn’t go away. Not my cup of tea.

In short: A highly roasted easy to drink stout like many others. Ok.
How: Bottle 12oz, consumed with a few months on it.
The look: Black body topped by a medium tan head with medium retention.
In long: Nose is scorched cereals, burnt coniferous trees, light coffee notes. That’s a lot of roast in the aroma. The well carbonated body has a grainy texture and is not as rich and corpulent as I like a near 10% beer to be, but that’s often the case with such highly roasted beers. Taste is also dominated by roast, so roasted that it falls into vegetables territory. All that roast is backed by black liquorice, some molasses and dark fruits concentrate. All that roast is pretty good at hiding the sweetness. And with the low sweetness sensation, the medium body and no alcohol presence this beer feels like a 6% stout. All in all a decent stout, just a little too much on the vegetable side of things for me to give it a better than ‘ok’ rating. Another beer, I drink too much, the only way I’ll ever be considered a role model is if there is I am asked to wear rolls and parade in front of people.

22 ounce bottle. Pours black with a small reddish brown head. Aroma of malt, chocolate, coffee, and fruit. Taste is roasted malt, dark chocolate, coffee, and dark fruit. Very tasty and very well made.

Pours boot black and viscous with a finely bubbled mocha head that fades quickly to a rim. A bit of lacing. Aroma is is burnt brown sugar with a faint hint of booze. Taste is burnt toffee, caramel and chocolate with a booze and bitter coffee finish. Less chocolate/more roasty; chocolate and alcohol flavors rise with warming. Thinner and shorter of flavor than I expected. Good, but not great.

Very interesting, heavy port dark fruit flavors, kinda reminds me of what Dark Lord used to be before the ABV hike, very impressive.

Haven’t had an impy stout in a while. Pours thick black with thinner brown head. Smell is dark chocolate, sweet toffee, some booze, slight licorice. Taste is medium sweet, some booze as it warms, swirling dark and semi sweet chocolate, minor anise and dark fruits. Nice velvet palate . Nice surprise here.
