The ancient legends that abound the Russian Imperial Stout of yore are filled with tempestuous romance, sinful thievery, and scurvy, too. So highly regarded was this historic recipe, the Russian Kings tried to keep it all to themselves. They failed. Today we bring you our own dastardly dark version, with a rich and roasty aroma, notes of plum and port and a velvety texture so luscious it just might make a grown man weep.

355ml bottle. Pours an opaque black, with a small and rapidly diminishing dark tan head. Earthy, savoury malt mixes with plum, liquorice and faint alcohol in the aroma. Mild herbal hops up front are soon overcome by smooth plum, which leads into a rich blend of port, faint liquorice and bittersweet dark chocolate. A mild Scotch whisky flavour comes in at the finish, which leaves a warming aftertaste. This is very fine imperial stout, with the rich, full body and subtle complexity that the style demands. Very good.

Very interesting, heavy port dark fruit flavors, kinda reminds me of what Dark Lord used to be before the ABV hike, very impressive.

Haven’t had an impy stout in a while. Pours thick black with thinner brown head. Smell is dark chocolate, sweet toffee, some booze, slight licorice. Taste is medium sweet, some booze as it warms, swirling dark and semi sweet chocolate, minor anise and dark fruits. Nice velvet palate . Nice surprise here.

The aroma is chocolate, coffee and heady tobacco. I feel like smoking a cigar right now to accent my experience. The pour is black with a russet head that decided not to stick around too long. A very thick, oily body with a nice average carbonation. Not too boozy, just right with the afterward fading to a light reminder of the brew. If I had access to this Russian Imperial Stout again, I would find it again and make it mine.

Tap at hops and pie. Clear dark reddish brown with a chocolate brown head. Aromas of roasted malt, dark chocolate, coffee, and some dark fruit notes. Flavor is roasted malts, coffee, pine, and chocolate. Medium bodied, smooth with a bitter end.

Draft in The Hopping Pig, San Diego on 18th March 2014. Really black with a lasting beige crown. Sweet and sour nose, Roasted malts, over roasted malts actually with liquorice, coffee, dark chocolate and a vinous under-smell. The taste was very similar with a slight fruitiness within the mix. The alcohol was almost hidden. Good body depth and a fine Imperial Stout (not that I have had many to compare it with).

Bottle, big thick oily black pour, nice finger of mocha head with good retention, beautiful. Aroma, thick roasted malts, brown sugar, coffee and chocolate. Taste, lots of coffee roast up front, thick mouthfeel, some chocolate, sticky bitter aftertaste. Overall, a solid RIS.

True to it’s name, Dark Seas is as dark as they come. The head was a very dark brown and the liquid itself looked like ink. From the initial pop of the top, I smelled that sweet unmistakable aroma of a true stout. The first sip satisfies in a way only a dark beer connoisseur would appreciate. Overall this is a great beer for all you stout drinkers.

Pours a finger of dark brown head on a black body. The aroma is initially roasted malt and then cocoa. The taste is rich and buttery. Chocolate and toasted malt mostly with some toffee in the background. Really nice. The texture is super soft and smooth with low carbonation. Perfect. A great brew.

Bottle courtesy of "Mr.Plumpy". Colour...basic black with a thick tan head. Nose...dark brown sugar, sugar sirop and brownies. Palate...oaky, tannic and oozing with boozy goodness. There’s a bitter feel and plenty of dryness that’s loaded with chocolate and molasses. The finish is long and oaky.
