The ancient legends that abound the Russian Imperial Stout of yore are filled with tempestuous romance, sinful thievery, and scurvy, too. So highly regarded was this historic recipe, the Russian Kings tried to keep it all to themselves. They failed. Today we bring you our own dastardly dark version, with a rich and roasty aroma, notes of plum and port and a velvety texture so luscious it just might make a grown man weep.

Opaque black with dark tan head, brandy aroma. Coffee, anise, roasted malts. Alcohol malty lingering finish. Not refined perhaps, but lots to like in this RIS.

Just what you would expect for a top notch RIS, heaps of coffee and chocolate with the roasted malts, also has hints of Brandy. Very dark, opaque, quickly fading light brown head. Rich roasted malts, chocolate covered cherry, Espresso, warming alcohol. Smooth texture, rich and chewy, really good, should we call this a dessert beer?

Bottle 355ml. Black appearance with a dark brown head. Nose is dark chocolate, coffee, prunes, and blackberries in the nose. Medium full body with an average carbonation. Pretty well balanced- moderate high sweetness and bitterness. Lots of chocolate, dark fruit, roasted malts and some light vegetables. The booze isn’t too much. Pretty decent stout! ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

In Bar Viriato. At lunch, with Pedro, Miguel, and David. With Papas Bravas. Soft taste and easy to drink, which makes it very dangerous because of its high ABV. However, Id prefer a bit more body

355ml bottle, consumed in a gypsy wagon, 9.8%. ’Maximum durability’ is Feb 2015. So I guess this has exceeded its maximum durability…Black, small brown head. Aroma is molasses, ash, touch of yeast. Body is medium, soft carbonation, slighlty foamy. Taste is ash, espresso, treacle. Finishes with some salty liquorice and ash. It’s a big one. Very decent.
