COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This year’s Mission St. Anniversary Ale showcases complex malt flavors with roasty notes layered in and medium hop character. It is a blend of three incredible brews carefully blended for maximum aroma and flavor. We affectionately call this brew an Imperial Brown Ale.

22 oz bottle from TJ’s. Pretty sure this is an exclusive. Pours an inky deep watery brown with thick lacey cream colored head. Aroma is figs, molasses, and a hint of floral spice notes. Taste is rich dark roasty malts, brown sugar, nice bitter piney hops, and some figs and raisins on the finish. Lots of complex flavors that don’t quite come together perfectly. Not flawless, but at $3 a bottle, this is an absurd bargain.

2011 vintage 22 oz bottle. Bought at Trader Joe’s downtown SF at the end of the year 4 years ago. It was cheap - I think that they cost $2.99 each at the time, so I bought at least four bottles. Recently, I tumbled onto a couple old bombers while cleaning out the back of my ’storage’ area. I wiped off the dust and immediately saw that this was a 4 year old bottle of strong ale. I figured that this was the best type of beer to hold up from ageing, so I put one in the cooler for ’the boys’ to check out later that evening during the game. Sure enough, the ale held up well after that duration. The malts had been mellowed by the hops to give a rich, complex flavor profile. We tasted rich caramel, coffee, and toffee notes. The color is dark as night. This brew would make a great after dinner drink to go with a rich desert. After a few sips of straight-up ale at 8.5% ABV, a few of us decided to cut the dark flavors with a some lager. I can report that Full Sail Session lager (red label) works very well. Nice to know that I have another bottle in the cellar to enjoy later.

(22oz bomber 2013 vintage) clear rich caramel, soapy tan bubbles. Nose of olive, brine, corn, medium hoppy. Weird. Taste of corn, old hops, burnt caramel, old and a touch oxidized.

2014 bottle - I tend more toward the lighter end of the beer spectrum these days, but for what this is, there seems to be some nicely concentrated nuances - aroma has heavy maltedness, wood, honeycomb, raisin, fig, bread and caramel - flavor has about the same, a tad sweet and flabby, but very forward dark fruit and brown sugar with wood and darker caramel background - nice faintly peat like palate with a twinge of bitterness - pretty decent stuff...

22oz bottle - This rating is for the 2012 Anniversary bottle, but I’m not sure about the subtle differences from 2011, so I’ll put the rating here until otherwise suggested to move it. A malt-forward aroma, with clean notes of chocolate, toffee, light alcohol and just a touch of coffee/roast. Flavor also match the flavor with a strong malt profile...chocolate, caramel, light alcohol, and earthy hops. It kind of blurs the lines of a strong ale and a brown ale. Really tasty, and for $3 a bomber...makes it even better.

"2012 basically the same beer. Probably the cheapest good bomber at 2.99 I’ve ever had. Strong roasted malt and chocolate nose, with some coffee, caramel & hops in the flavor as well. Nicely balanced. Good for a "strong ale" great as a brown."

Dark brown. Thick lace. Licorice. A tad of mold in finish. Nice brown but an american strong?

22 oz bottle is 2014 Vintage. Pours a clear dark brown with maroon hues when backlit, with minimal lacing and edge head. Aroma is dark fruits and sweet malt. Flavor is malt and dark fruits, with prominent and unbalanced forward alcohol in the finish. Sweet bread yeast finish. Thin to medium bodied, best in small amounts.

The beer is dark mahogany with crimson highlights. Small, soapy tan head. The aroma brings raisins, cookies, sweet malt, dark fruits. Sweet and malty. Dark malts with prominent fruit, finishing with alcohol sweetness. Ripe plums, a hint of cinnamon. A bit much. Lacking elegance and a refined character that would make a nearly 10% abv strong ale appealing after more than a few ounces. Eh...

22 oz bottle 2012 vintage. Pours a slightly hazy amber brown color with a small off white head. The aroma and flavor have sweeter caramel malts, dark fruits, figs, toasted malts, mild nutty character, some earthy and leafy hoppiness. Solid, especially for the price.
