Commercial Description:
Dating back to 18th century England, the custom of blending pale and dark beers has kept the "Black & Tan" a favorite of experienced beer drinkers for centuries. Our famous recipe combines a robust English Porter with a fine Continental Pilsner, preserving the character of each, while creating the classic taste of the legendary "Black & Tan." In true American style, we bring you the best of both beers as they meet in Mississippi Mud.

A blast from the past of college days--and on sale at Bottle King! Frothy white head sits on a a copper-to-dark brown body in a nonick glass...the blending is noticeably porter/pilsner...the head holds a bit unevenly...a rather nondescript scent of soft malt and soft hops... smooth, almost buttery mouthfeel; effervescent and lively, swift...hops are softened, malts are likewise... crisp and mellow... quite drinkable... that curious combination still wields a pleasant mouthfeel and mood--and that jug’s just as attractive to this 31-year old as it was to that 21-year old... even if the Mud’s made in New York...

if this was supposed to be a amber ale then I would have to say that is very good, but seeing that it a mix between two stlyes beer, it turns out average but a very good average. malts lightly thin some mild caramel. Very drinkable though

1 qt jug pours brilliant clear amber (not a Porter like look to me) and one inch tan head. The aroma I get caramel, crystal malts and nuttiness to go along with a mild note of astringency. As it warmed just a bit I start to get some butteriness out of the nose. Hmm. The taste is thin but has some modest flavor. I get mild nuttiness moving toward a roasty note and then evening out a bit with just a dab of caramel. It seems to end with a pleasant burnt maltiness that wraps things up nice and neat.

Porters aren’t my thing but this was nice in that the coffee flavour was toned down for more sweet flavours. Addin the lighter beer definitely helps the porter go down smoother. Give me a Beamish any day over this.

My wife picked up a large jug of this while on a business trip to St. Louis....while black and tans are not my usual choice, I found that I really enjoyed this one.......the beer poured a dark brown, similar to a newcastle brown ale.....this beer tasted surpisingly light and satisfying....the sweet chocolate/caramel notes accompanied the roasted malts beautifully....not one I could drink a lot of, but a nice beer to have for a change.

Dark brown with small head. Nose and flavor of roasty malts, molasses, and chocolate. Watery for a porter.
