Commercial Description:
Dating back to 18th century England, the custom of blending pale and dark beers has kept the "Black & Tan" a favorite of experienced beer drinkers for centuries. Our famous recipe combines a robust English Porter with a fine Continental Pilsner, preserving the character of each, while creating the classic taste of the legendary "Black & Tan." In true American style, we bring you the best of both beers as they meet in Mississippi Mud.

Rather light looking for a Black & Tan. Nice head with some decent lacing though. Color is a very dark copper color. Slight malt aroma. Metallic flavor with a roasted malt aftertaste. Nothing really exciting to write home about this brew.

Hehehheh, from Utica NY! Big monolithic looking nifty unique jug container, a quart like no other! Really gives the impression of being like one of those xxx jugs you see in cartoons. Big brown pour, seems filtered, at least at first. Aroma of chocolate or carob is ever present and at times, it borders on the smell of handsoap. The first taste is rather pleasant, not extremely bitter and it seems much like a dark lager or a serene schartzbier. Chocolaty flavor carries over from the aroma. Much better than I imagined, for some reason. Good tingly carbonation is gamely apparent. Rather agreeable all round and the alky content is not too evident. Seems to come across like a cheap beer…with amicable manners. No hint of hop in this brew. Some roasty toasty hints in there but again, not on the bitter side. I would say this has the civility of darker low alky beers from the old country. Good quality finish for a lager lover, no annoying medicinal linger. I liked this cheapdark beer. One of the better porters I’ve encountered. Rather charming!

Awesome 32 oz. Jug! great taste, especially for how cheap it was. Smooth and a nice after taste.

Brownish amber, roasted malts, nutty, caramel , little hops, little dark chocolate. A nice blend.

32 oz jug from the Utah State Store. Pours a dark amber color with a very thick beige head into a Guinness glass. The aroma is nutty, much like a brown ale or mild ale; some toasted malts and caramel. The flavor is mild and nice; lots of toasted malts, caramel, buttery flavors, chestnuts, a good hop finish that is slightly bitter and fades to sweet malts. Easy to drink and not bad. Yeah, the jar is cool to buy once. After that the price would discourage me.

They say you can’t judge a book by its cover. Same apparently applies to beer bottles (except FFF!). Porter flavors are almost impossible to discern, except in the head. More like a weak amber, really, both in appearance and flavor.
