Dating back to 18th century England, the custom of blending pale and dark beers has kept the "Black & Tan" a favorite of experienced beer drinkers for centuries. Our famous recipe combines a robust English Porter with a fine Continental Pilsner, preserving the character of each, while creating the classic taste of the legendary "Black & Tan." In true American style, we bring you the best of both beers as they meet in Mississippi Mud.

Pours light brown with fairly strong off-white head. Starts out as a porter but quickly fades to a light pilsner. Flavor is caramel, chocolate and hay-grassy notes. Overall ok.

Bottle (jug?). Medium sweet, light bitter taste, really watered-down. It even smells like a watery porter. The malty sweetness is there (though just o.k.), but without that salty, pungent hoppy bite from the pilsner I’m expecting, I’m sad. You get what you pay for. Better off getting yuengling’s black & tan. Off the record, will keep jug.

Pours clear black (red in bright sunlight) with a tan head. Aroma is roaated malt, licorice, and very light hops. Flavor is the same with an obvious lager taste. Tastes a little like if you had a "porter lite". Better than a regular light beer for sure.

Pours a dark brown with a moderate light brown head. Aroma of roasted malts, caramel and some grassy hops. Flavor is roasted malts, caramel, grass, coffee and light chocolate. Overall the flavor is light and the body is really thin.

Aromas of mellow roast, light caramel, and subtle hops. Clear, dark ruby with a fading off-white head. Off-dry, metallic, malt-forward with mainly caramel flavors. Light-medium bodied, decently clean.

Schöner cremiger Schaum, im Glas leicht dunkelrot-braun. Malziger Geruch.

Actually tastes like they did blend two beers, so kudos, especially for this price point. Some interesting malt in the Porter. I guess a decent lager in there. And unique packaging. This was a lot better a decade plus ago (though, that would have to do with me and not the beer), but kudos to them for making a successful product, even if it isn’t that great and has a low score.

Type: 1-Quart bottle Glass: Stone Ruination IPA glass From: Trader Joe’s in La Mesa (San Diego), Calif. Price: $2.99 Purchased: Jan. 4, 2014 Consumed: Jan. 9, 2014 Misc.: N/A Poured a mahogany brown clear color with 1-to-2 fingers of khaki gray head. Poor foamy lacing along the sides of the glass. Poor retention on the top. Smelled black coffee, roasty nuts, dark chocolate, smoky woodfire and some toffee. Tasted a lot mellower than the smell. First though was what the hell is this? Got black licorice, smoky woodfire, crayon, nuts and faint coffee. Big drop off from the nose. Medium body. Oily texture. Soft carbonation. Abrupt finish. This beer doesn’t quite fit the title. I think Mississippi dirt might be more appropriate.
