COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Dating back to 18th century England, the custom of blending pale and dark beers has kept the "Black & Tan" a favorite of experienced beer drinkers for centuries. Our famous recipe combines a robust English Porter with a fine Continental Pilsner, preserving the character of each, while creating the classic taste of the legendary "Black & Tan." In true American style, we bring you the best of both beers as they meet in Mississippi Mud.

Pours light brown with fairly strong off-white head. Starts out as a porter but quickly fades to a light pilsner. Flavor is caramel, chocolate and hay-grassy notes. Overall ok.

16 ounce can from Antioch. Tannish brown pour with an off white head leaving some lace. Aroma has sweet toffee light brown sugar and some earth. Taste is of earthy sweet malts and a bit of peat. Medium-bodied. Finishes sweet and a bit earthy. Is this a brown ale? Is this a Scotch Ale? I am not sure what they are doing 11.8

32 ounce screw capped bottle. Served in a nonic pint glass, the beer pours a clear ruby red/brown color with not quite an inch light tan head. Head retention is decent enough, and thereís an OK amount of lacing. The brew smells like toffee, tea, and grainy malt. It tastes like grainy/bready malt, caramel, toffee, tea and some herbalness. Mouthfeel/body is light/medium, itís a bit slick and is easy to drink. Itís better than I thought it would be. $2.99 for a quart of this isnít too bad at all. For the price, itís certainly worth a try!

Can at home. Deep ruby brown pour. The aroma is roasty, light hops, raw grains. Light bodied, roasted malt, light coffee. Simple, dry and balanced finish. A brown ale. Highly drinkable. Underrated.

Poor unloved beer. Itís really not that bad. Would rather drink this than most mass market beers. Itís more Amber ale than porter for sure. But drinkable.

32 oz growler from grocery outlet Redding CA. pourís a very pleasing dark reddish brown/ruby color with a decent 2 finger head of tan foam that dissipates quickly. Aroma is rich with roasted maltís, caramel, chocolate, coffee and biscuit. taste follows aroma, sweet and carmaly up front that turns into more chocolate and coffee with a nice clean earthy finish. mouth feel is lite to medium buddy with good carbonation. this is my first Black and Tan so I have no other examples to go by but I really like this beer.
