Tasting Notes
Moa Imperial Stout is a very strong, bold upfront and rich offering of a famous beer style. Aged in Pinot Noir barrels, this beer not only displays coffee and mocha charters but also some sweet and spicy notes. A tannin like finish and an oak induced mellow bitterness makes it a serious stout. Moa Imperial Stout is best served just below room temperature in a tulip glass.

Alextricity (509) - Michigan, USA - OCT 5, 2013
Had on-tap at One-Eyed Bettyís in Ferndale, Michigan as part of a paddle. Appearance: Pitch black with a miniscule, slightly tan head. Lacing is phenomenal, and my sample glass was full of it from top to bottom. Smell: Smokey. Thatís what I think of when I smelled and tasted this beer... a really smokey, ashy sort of character to it that I wasnít really expecting -- I felt like this was a smoked beer. I donít KNOW if they smoke this beer, but it gave that to me, and I actually enjoyed it. A lot of ashy, smokey roasted malt smells. Despite that, this doesnít come off as burnt to me at all. Taste/feel: A lot like the smell. It tastes very good, but itís sort of one dimensional. Thereís that smoky flavor with the roasted malts, but thatís really it. I do love the slight bitterness of this one, and that itís not sweet or syrupy. Iíd still like if Moa RIS maybe had a fruity sort of sweetness to it though, so it doesnít just drink like ashy/smoke water. My description of this beer makes it sound pretty awful, but I think the BAsí consensus of this beer is just about spot on -- itís a good beer. It doesnít have a rich body that I think of most RISís of having, and I donít even think that the alcohol comes through at all in any way for this beer. So if youíre expecting a big, bold, rich and heavy RIS to warm you up in a foot of snow, this probably isnít the choice. For a guy like me, who tends to enjoy a good stout, but necessarily an RIS, this would be worth trying out. It has that nice smoke/ash flavor, itís easy drinking (too much so given the ABV), and Iíd have it again if I wanted a smokey stout.

375 ml corked bottle. Black pour with a thinish texture and light pinch of brown head that leaves little bubbles fades pretty fast. Big roast sweet smell, bits of candied sugar. Tast is nice and roasty up front with a very smooth/hoppy finish. Not much Pinot barrel but gawddamn this is smooth and drinkable.

Bottle from Central City Liquor Store in Surrey. Thick, black and oily, with a bit of tan head. Chocolate on the nose. Heavily roasted malts, yielding impressions of coffee and chocolate. Dark rich goodness with every sip!

Aroma is dark malts, coffee, light chocolate and a hint of fruit. The flavor is dark roasted malts, dark fruit, mild earthiness, slightly sticky/oily and a mild/medium acidic/alcoholic finish.

Bottle. Pours very heavily and oily; utterly opaque black with a brown, thick, fine-grained, almost gelid head. Nose is port wine, oak, smoke, and fresh-ground coffee. Very rich and solid on the tongue -- baking chocolate, ginger, molasses, red wine, and glace viande notes take center stage. Round and rich. A meaty, beefy stout, and a damned good one.
