4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Poured from bottle to glass. Rich dark opaque with light brown head. Nice retention, nice lacing. Aroma is sweet coffee, chocolate, figs. Mouthfeel is really nice with the moderate carbonation. Burnt malts interlace a slight astrigency with the hops to counterbalance the malty sweetness. CO2 provides a nice sharpness up front and finishes slightly dry. Overall a pretty nice Imperial Stout...especially for the price point.

4.2 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 18/20
Bottle. Pours very dark, tan head. Smells really rich, VERY chocolate. Tastes very chocolate! Roasty, hoppy bitterness in the middle, chocolate finish. Bitter dark chocolate taste is played against the hop bitterness making it balance the sweet dark malts. Really interesting, really good!!

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 13/20
16th March 2013
Opaque black - brown beer, big pale tan head. Light dry palate. Dry and mellow dark malt.Touches of cream, toffee and roast. Just a very light trace of red wine. Bubblegum ester streak seems out of place. Finishes dry. A but dry and could have done with a stronger barrel presence.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
375 ml bottle. Pours black with full light tan head. Aromas of ash, black coffee, sweet chocolate, and heavily roasted malts. Flavors of sweet black coffee, light vanilla and chocolate, and roasted barley. Quite a light mouthfeel for a stout and high carbonation. Hot.

2.7 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
10/4/13 bottle from CBO. Went and bought this because it was BA beer day and saw it the night before.
Wish I didn't.
Bottle. Pours black with a thin off white head. Nose is floral with a little roasted malt. Taste is ...weird is the only way to describe it. Slight chocolate and coffee but more cough medicine then anything else. After drinking it, I read the reviews and was surprised how "off" I was compared to the majority of raters. Oh well. To each their own.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Had on-tap at One-Eyed Betty’s in Ferndale, Michigan as part of a paddle.
Appearance: Pitch black with a miniscule, slightly tan head. Lacing is phenomenal, and my sample glass was full of it from top to bottom.
Smell: Smokey. That’s what I think of when I smelled and tasted this beer... a really smokey, ashy sort of character to it that I wasn’t really expecting -- I felt like this was a smoked beer. I don’t KNOW if they smoke this beer, but it gave that to me, and I actually enjoyed it. A lot of ashy, smokey roasted malt smells. Despite that, this doesn’t come off as burnt to me at all.
Taste/feel: A lot like the smell. It tastes very good, but it’s sort of one dimensional. There’s that smoky flavor with the roasted malts, but that’s really it. I do love the slight bitterness of this one, and that it’s not sweet or syrupy. I’d still like if Moa RIS maybe had a fruity sort of sweetness to it though, so it doesn’t just drink like ashy/smoke water.
My description of this beer makes it sound pretty awful, but I think the BAs’ consensus of this beer is just about spot on -- it’s a good beer. It doesn’t have a rich body that I think of most RIS’s of having, and I don’t even think that the alcohol comes through at all in any way for this beer. So if you’re expecting a big, bold, rich and heavy RIS to warm you up in a foot of snow, this probably isn’t the choice. For a guy like me, who tends to enjoy a good stout, but necessarily an RIS, this would be worth trying out. It has that nice smoke/ash flavor, it’s easy drinking (too much so given the ABV), and I’d have it again if I wanted a smokey stout.

375 ml corked bottle. Black pour with a thinish texture and light pinch of brown head that leaves little bubbles fades pretty fast. Big roast sweet smell, bits of candied sugar. Tast is nice and roasty up front with a very smooth/hoppy finish. Not much Pinot barrel but gawddamn this is smooth and drinkable.
