3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Poured from corked bottle into a snifter
Appearance – The beer pours a pitch black color with a small head of tan colored foam. The head fades rather quickly leaving just a hint of a foamy lace on the sides of the glass.
Smell – A huge aroma of a roasted malt smell with a rather strong aroma of red wine and some notes of oak greet the nose. Along with these smells, comes some other aromas of a coffee and dark cocoa flavor. A light caramel and vanilla round out the smell and with a bit of earthy hop, produce a rather dry stout and red wine aroma overall.
Taste – The taste begins with a blend of a dark roasted malt flavor mixed with a good showing of an oak flavor right at the start. The oak grows stronger and stronger as the taste moves on, with some flavors of a dry red wine come to the tongue as well. The oak and wine grow to a decent strength and are meet with some bitter coffee and cocoa powder joining the tongue as well. The little bit of caramel and vanilla sweetness that was upfront is lost by now, leaving a rather dry dark flavor overall. With the rather dry roasted and bittered flavor, mixed with the oak and dry red wine, one is left with a dry and roasty, slightly tanniny, and bitter stout flavor to linger on the tongue.
Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is rather thin for a stout of 10.2 % abv with a carbonation level that is rather moderate. For the style a lower carbonation and thicker body would have likely been a bit better for accentuating the roast and dry flavors of the brew and would have made for a nicer base for the slow sipping style that the brew should have.
Overall – An OK brew, but really nothing all that fantastic. A bit too wine like and tanniny without having much of a body and all while lacking enough sweetness to balance the bitter and wine.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
This beer pours nearly black with some cola color around the edges. Thin white head that dissipates quickly to a sparse outer ring, and spotty lacing. Aroma of malt, dark fruit and wood. Full-bodied with flavors of roast malt, coffee and subtle vinous oak. The finish is roasty with a malt and coffee aftertaste. Pretty good overall.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
There’s a light smoky component that hits right off the bat followed by some chocolate and coffee aromas. The flavor is quite smoky in the way a red wine may be described as smoky. Tannins are up front as well. Coffee, chocolate, and vanilla join the party later. This is the most unique imperial stout I’ve had.

2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 13/20
An unremarkable pour, much like flat cola. No head to speak of. Oak is prominent with only the slightest hint of the pinot noir of the barrel. Alcohol (10.2%) is masked in this slightly bitter and moderately hoppy brew.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
[6943-20141129] Bottle. Roasted malt grain aroma. Black cola body with a medium-lasting foamy tan head. Roasted grainy boozy flavour has a light caramel finish. Full body actually hides the booze well. Delicious. (8/4/8/4/17) 4.1
Overheard: "When people with livers leave, and you open new beer, it worries me significantly."

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle from Lancaster Wines. Pours black with a short lasting tan head. Quite a rich coffee aroma with vinous notes. The taste is rich and tasty. There are notes of coffee and chocolate with quite a bit of hop spiciness. Perhaps a little over hopped. Not the best imp ever, but still good beer.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Pours pretty much black with a foam head that reduces to a thin layer quite soon. Aroma has coffee, roast malt - and is also a bit fruitily vinous -maybe because the bottle has aged a bit. Taste has bitter chocolate, dark fruits, a bit of booze. Hops attacking as well but actually not so prominent (any more?). Very potent bitter chocolate indeed. Cocoa nibs but not very dry. Good and well made imperial stout, enjoying this one a lot.
