3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 RollinHard (1024) - Fort Worth, Texas, USA - FEB 23, 2013Pours black brown with a small ring of foam for a head. Aroma of licorice, espresso, unsweet chocolate, black tea, red wine, and maybe the slightest hint of sulfur. A lot to wrap one’s head around. Flavor is semi sweet with dark chocolate, espresso, licorice, tea-like herbs, and plenty of dry vinous notes from the wine barrel. Finishes bitter, woodsy and dry, with an after taste of earth, wine, and heavily roasted coffee. Lingering. Medium-heavy bodied, carbonation seems a little high for the small head pour. Definitely a beer that keeps you interested.

Bottled@HBF2013. Black colour, small beige head. Aroma is liquorice, raisins, some wood, vanilla and some sugary notes as well. Flavour is liquorice, mild roasted malts, some ripe fruits and mild hoppyness as well. Nicely balanced and quite fresh imperial stout.
3.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 Cantabrian (383) - Christchurch, NEW ZEALAND - MAY 12, 2013
This is how an imperial stout - a Russian Imperial Stout, as historically developed - should taste like. Lovely aroma of leather, cocoa, a touch of coffee, roasted malts and red wine. Pours black as a shoe, with a cream-coloured head that will hang on for a good while. Flavours of charred malts (the bitter ones), chocolates, coffee, oak barrels - wine - plums, and a considerable amount of salt. Yes, salty, unctuous, this oily beer delivers what it promises. Never mind the winish presentation and marketing. This is the real thing.
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 Scopey (3246) - Croydon, Greater London, ENGLAND - MAY 8, 2013
Bottle at CGarvie tasting. It pours near black/very dark brown with a small light tan head. The nose is roasted malt, chocolate, caramel, berry, varnish, coffee and a touch of spice. The taste is roasted malt, earth, charcoal, alcohol warmth, berry, dark fruit, coffee, ash and chocolate with a dry, roasty finish. Very long finish. Medium-full body, fine-moderate carbonation and chewy mouth-feel. Flavoursome and well balanced.
3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 deekyn (541) - Yosemite, California, USA - MAY 6, 2013
A- pours a thick black with light red edges and one finger of red tan head. S- coffee and chalk up front with light stinging red wine tannins and cacao underlying the more prominent aromas. Pinot becomes more apparent as it warms. Toasted malts and some very quiet musty hoppiness all tie together. M- smooth and subtle considering the barrel aging with a moderate palate and mild carbonation. T- light coffee and chocolate mixes with flat mineral water in the front. Pinot noir comes next with more faint tannins that do not overwhelming the toasted malts. Chalky and grassy ending mixes with hop notes during the efficient end.

This. Smells. FANTASTIC! I can definitely smell a strong scent of the pinot noir barrels. Darker brown head and almost black color. Punches you in the tounge with nuts, licorice and a twang of wine. Feels heavy. Is heavy. Makes you warm in the jaws. With the heavy wine feel i wanna eat this with Italian food. Damn good. Have only one, unless you’re going big then maybe two before you’ll fall asleep in your pasta.

Basically black, and with a small tight tan head. Lovely rich roast in the aroma. Spicy palate, sharp, almost chilli-like burn. Very interesting. Nicely dry. Finish long and burnt.
3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 14/20 Beerenberger (795) - Fischer, Texas, USA - APR 29, 2013
Nose of coffee, chocolate, and roased malts. Pours an opaque blackish-brown with a mostly lasting tan head and moderate lacing. The taste is dark roasted coffee, bandaids, hints of dark fruit, and a crisp hoppy bitter finish. Medium body with medium carbonation. Overall, an excellent imperial stout.

Pours reddish back with a dense mocha head. Aroma is earthy, vinous, coffee and roast. Very interesting flavor combination that works well together. Taste is bitter with a touch of sweetness, drying wine like finish. I really enjoyed this one.
