Originally a special brew for the West Coast IPA challenge (which it won in 2011), unique dry hopping occurs in the fermenter/conditioning tank as opposed to the kettle. A variety of hops are added throughout: at the beginning of the boil for bittering and late for dryness. This technique produces a well-balanced Double IPA.

750 ml bottle. Pours a dark amber with light white head. Aromas of caramel malts and light pine, with a light yeastiness. Flavors of dry toasted malts, bitter pine, grass and dried fruit. Very bitter for a DIPA. Not what I was expecting based on previous reviews. Canít say itís anything special.

750mL bottle, pours a cloudy / hazy dark amber with a small white head. Nose brings out zesty piney hops, light Belgian yeast, and some white wine-like tanginess. Flavour is certainly unique and lovely, with notes of zesty citrus hops, pine, Belgian yeast, and the aforementioned white wine-like tanginess. The Belgian quality mixes wonderfully with the hoppy west coast IPA quality. Excellent stuff.

Tropical gum, papaya, fruit cocktail hops in the nose with some cara malt toastiness and crustiness, some minerality and faint phenol spiciness. Medium-full body, strongly hoppy but short of strongly bitter, sweetness high but balanced by carbonation and acidity. Very full mouth presence and the carbonation and malt are soft. Lightly hazed amber with a fine white head. From draft.

Keg - SkySport Grill, Auckland. A clear, dark amber with a fine off-white head. Big, chewy malts, passion fruit, pink grapefruit, biscuity malts and bread with some yeastiness. Caramel, butter and yeast esters linger alongside the pith in the finish. Full body, lengthy finish, which is bittersweet.

The head is good, It smells maltintensive, creamy, hoppy, bit bitter, less fruity. The taste is creamy, hoppy, malty a bit fruity, bit alcoholic, nice to drink; but I would prefer more fruitiness.

has been renamed the moa royale i believe, not sure if there are recipe changes. had it once as mcmoa and once as royale. hop bitterness is a bit much and not well balanced with the fruit, which isnít as present as iíd like in a double ipa. not bad but not something iíd come back to again too often either.

Amber colour with a good collar of white head and evident carbonation. Aromas of stonefruit, caramel, strawberry tart and pastry along with American hops that give it a slightly spruce quality. Good strong bitterness and sweetish malt character, plenty of oily body. Really grabs the tongue like a West Coast IPA. Lengthy finish that brings out more dessert pasty loveliness and fulsome bitterness.
