With a wheat beer base, Moa Sour Blanc 2012 Vintage is a throwback to how the very first beers were produced. Fermented and aged in oak barrels using natural wild yeast and selected bacterium, this beer carefully balances phenolic and complex acidity with dryness and funk. A sour beer in the traditional Belgian Lambic style with a complexity best described as a riot of flavours.

Bright yellow with a good finger of active, bright white head, plenty of carbonation and some turbidity. The aroma was quite pronounced: sour lemon all over. It is perfumy and enticing and the flavour is similarly strong. It was clean, sour and refreshing and I drifted off to sleep a happy man.

Bottle, 11/9/2014. Pours cloudy straw yellow, golden highlights, small fizzy head, some carbonation still visible. Aroma is soft sour lemon, touch of apricot, with dusty wheat undertones, yeast and tropical brett funkiness. Taste is bright, sour lemon and citrus fruit, wheat cracker and yeast, moderate bitter finish, clean. Light crisp body, not overly sour, nice balanced. Almost lambic-like characteristics, like Zwanze 2010. Really nice, would like to try again.

As a sour beer this is one of the most accessible ones that I’ve had, and whilst the palate is of course dominated by the sour it’s not all there is, with a sense of creaminess that carries it and compliments it. I thought it looked fantastic and better when I muddied up the yeast sediment into it.

Pours an opaque off yellow with minimal head. Amazing sour aroma. Bitter taste on first mouthful. Very yeast dominant as would be expected, very earthy. Lingers on the palate. Overall a great sour beer, off to get another couple of bottles tomorrow
