3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 IMtheOptimator (1161) - Bethel, USA - JUL 27, 2009
Bottle shared at John’s gathering. Poured a dark amber with an off-white head. Had not idea this was going to be a black IPA, a style I am admittedly not terribly keen on. Aroma of some wildflowers, a bit of pine, and biscuity malt. Flavor is bitter with a buttery biscuity beginning (hurray for alliteration), some bitter pine and grapefruit rind, leading to a surprisingly sweet though somewhat metallic ashen finish. Hops don’t seem dominant enough for this to be a true double and the few off flavors are hurting my enjoyment of this. Eh.

Dampled at an esbls tasting. Joe G. Brought this. Cloudy and dark brown with a small off white head. Mlivorice and chocolate sauce nose is a bit odd. Hops are the first thing tasted. They are stickt fruity and bitter. Some medicinal notes, too. Mlt and hops are not friends here.

Swing top bottle. Dark brown pour with off white head. Toasted malt, light breadiness, grapefruit, moderately bitter hops, and a touch of chocolate. Pretty dry beer, but not too exciting.

Dark brown in color, clear with a thin head. Rich dark roast aroma and nice floral hops. The flavor was thick roasty malt with hops that come out nicely. I liked the floral and fruit hops flavors. The bottle condition leaves this beer like a champagne like finish and bubbly feel. Thanks Douglas88 for sharing.

The best Black IPA that I have tried. There was an aroma of citrus, toasted malts, and a hint of coconut. The flavors were balanced very well, I got chocolate, a heavy roast malt character, and spice. This beer stuck to the sides of my cheeks. The hops are resinous, spicy, and full of citrus. This is a very good , I am already looking forward to the other one in my cellar.

Logans Tasting GABF 2010. Pours a deep dark black with a decent head. Aroma is slightly muddy, yeasty, solvent, sludgy chocolate, tootsie roll mixed with pine, citrus and dank hops, some grassy notes as well. Flavor is roast, toffee, slight coffee, some chocolate and ash burnt notes with some more grass pine and light citrus. Finish is a bit messy.

This was one of four bottles I brought home from the brewery. I hate to rate this beer but an education needs to happen. 3 of our bottles were never bottle conditioned properly or something. This bottle, another bottle of this beer and a Scotch ale were all compromised. I somehow ruined a homebrew myself possibly with mal sanitization so I understand. But this bottle...and the others...were not drinkable. And I find that very unfortunate. So long, moab brewing. At least I had a decent bottle of the Triple before at the brewery before you were 86’d.
