On tap at the brewpub. Very dark walnut brown. Husky roast aroma, some coffee. Flavours of coffee, chocolate liqueur, light plummy sweetness, dry finish. Quite enjoyable.

Pours black into a shaker. Mocha micro head with good retention recedes leaving thin sheets. Chocolate aromas. Dry with sweet milk chocolate upfront to back and into the lasting espresso finish.

On tap at Beidermans. Jet black pour with no head to speak of. Chocolate brownie and hints of roasted barley give way to bakers chocolate and coffee. Medium to full body with excellent carbonation. I really couldnít find anything wrong with this beer other than the pour- really delicious offering!

Off the tap at the brewpub. It poured dark brown top just about black with reddish hues around the glassís edge when held to the light. The head was silky brown but short lasting. The nose cried out dark malts, coffee grinds, and a wonderful smokiness. The body was thinner than I prefer in a stout but suitable to the style. Boldness was a good was to define the flavor with similar coffee grinds, dark malts, and smoke there followed by a low but appealing bitterness.

Included as part of a sampler. I find Moat offerings to be just average but I seem to keep coming back for more. Another visit, another sampler. Still so so but fresh beer is always good so Iím sure Iíll be back again. The stout is the one I felt was worthy enough to follow up the sampler with a pint.

In short: An archetype of the basic session stout. Nice brew.
How: Tap at Vermont Brewerís Festival 2010
The look: Black body topped by a small tan head
In long: Nose is very roasted. Taste has is very roasted, some coffee, some chocolate, some dark fruits. A pleasant bitterness that seems to come from the roastiness as much as the hops. Medium body, merdium carbonation. All in all this is a very standard stout with a bit of everything. Nothing special but it is nonetheless a beer I could drink all night long. Another decent session beer from this brewpub that with no reputation, or so I have been told numerous times.
