One of the surprises at the Great American Beerfest in Boston. I asked the guy who poured if this was brewed with coffee because of its great roasted coffee profile, but he said the brewery uses straight black patent malt for the flavor. Great coffee notes with a good amount of dark chocolate and burnt malts. Couldn’t tell what it looked like in the 2 oz. sampler, but it looked dark with white head. Flavor was rich and chocolatey with lots of burnt malt and coffee. Really good for a regular stout, and definitely the best regular that I had that day.

cask version at the brewpub, apparently dry hopped. Black in color, small sudsy head from the handpump. Aroma of chocolate, roast, and a good amount of citrus hops. Taste is roasty, chocolate with some citrus, and mild piney bitterness. interesting cask beer.

(Rating #1128)

Had this one on vacation at the brewpub. It poured black with a small white, creamy head. The nose was roasted malts . Flavor was a bittery chocolate and roasted coffee. Finished off dry. Good quality craftsmanship.

Draught. Very dark, with ruby tinges, and small tan head, nice lacing. Aroma is string mocha and chocolate. Flavor is similar with a dry roasty finish. Little thin in flavor.

Aroma of biscuity and roasted malt with toasted bread. Deep black pour with a ring of offwhite lace. Good flavor of biscuity and roasted malt, toasted bread and coacoa, bitter finish. Light to medium body with a dry texture and lively carbonation. Good stuff, it reminds me of Rogue’s Shakespeare Stout.

Sample at the Vermont Brewers’ Fest. Thick black. Nose very faint, roasty. Lightly vinous, medium bittersweet chocolate-coffee body, weak, with a bitter finish. Too light to support the bitterness, too little sugar.

Plenty of roasted malts and light sweetness in the aroma. Opaque black with thin white fully diminishing head. Simple and roasty with slight sticky malt sweetness. Low carbonation and still mouthfeel with somewhat watery body. On tap at the Vermont Brewers Festival.
