COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION Not for the faint of heart or those low in resolve. For years the city of Chattanooga negotiated with the state of Georgia to purchase buildings lying in the path of what is now South Broad St., the main thoroughfare between downtown Chattanooga and St. Elmo. On the night of May 6th, 1906 Chattanooga’s commissioner of streets and sewers, Ed Bass, brought a city crew and some bulldozers. By midnight any obstructions to the road were bulldozed. Bass drove the first car through the opened buildings around midnight. According to news accounts, word of the escapade spread quickly, and the streets filled with citizens cheering Bass and his workmen. The Elks club Band, said to be practicing nearby, appeared and played the song “Marching through Georgia.” By Monday morning the length of Broad Street was extended. The state of Georgia sought immediate action against the city, but Supreme Court ruled that a state’s sovereignty ended at the state line. This beer salutes the resolve of commissioner Bass (later a 4 term mayor), with a beer characterized by no holds barred hop additions (5) and traditional English Malts.
