Black House is an oatmeal coffee stout bursting with coffee aroma and flavor. Modern Times is one of the only breweries in the world to roast our own coffee, which allows us to be exceptionally picky about which coffees we use and how we roast them. The result is an abundantly flavorful beer that’s incredibly complex and aromatic, with loads of roast character and a chocolate-covered espresso bean finish. But Black House packs all that flavor into a reasonable package: at only 5.8% ABV, it can comfortably be consumed by the pint.

Awesome pour with a deep but slight translucent black. The coffee aroma is up front and powerful but not overdone. The taste is cold brew coffee, biscuit, a hint of bitter chocolate and a smooth finish. Super smooth, easy drinking yet very refined. Well done.

Draught at the brewpub in San Diego. Black beer with a decent beige head. Coffee aroma, roasted, malty, vanilla, chocolate, cocoa toffee, espresso, creamy notes. Hoppy roasted flavor, coffee, hay, vanilla, toffee, caramel, licorice, some dark chocolate. Nice body for the ABV.

Changing direction I switched to some less hopped styles to round out my sampler. A nice stout was rich in coffee flavors. If you prefer yours less malty then go with something from Stone or Alesmith instead. Personally I am glad to see more competition to keep the West Coast honest.

Aroma / Appearance - The fluid black base swirls around the small glass. Creamy tan head adds a nice layer of contrast. Strong black coffee drives a malt driven profile to its chocolately conclusion.

Flavor / Palate - Black coffee dominates the taste profile. Dark chocolate and plummy notes eventually come out as well. Overall though this is just as espresso driven as beers like Founder’s Breakfast Stout. If that is your thing then be sure to get a can. If not then look elsewhere for your fix - there are no shortage of other options here alone.

Can split with Pedro. Pours a deep brown with thin, creamy, tan head. Aroma of coffee, roasted malt, chocolate. Body is medium to medium-full. Nice coffee flavor but not overpowering, roast and dark chocolate. Pretty balanced. Dry finish with mild bitterness.

Super smooth cold a cold press coffee infused stout, giving a lot for 5.8%. Well rounded, a hint oily and flinty with a powdery dry finish.

Super fresh and very tasty with traces of chocolate and tobacco smoke. Hopefully that make it imperial barrel aged.

16oz can pours dark brown with light edges and 2 finger off-white head. Nose is nutty roast coffee beans, vanilla, milk, hershey syrup. Taste is roasty coffee, light smokiness, earthy, a touch thin, faint cocoa. Finish is roasty coffee and cream, vanilla, nutty.

Pounder->nonic. Pour is exactly Coke. A: lots of coffee with some chocolate malt. T: watery chocolate wi metallic coffee notes. Aroma far exceeds taste. Too thin and too much carbonation.

At stephen’s with Dave and Stephen. Aroma is beautiful coffee chocolate malt. Taste is smooth, roasty malt that is beautiful.
