Black House is an oatmeal coffee stout bursting with coffee aroma and flavor. Modern Times is one of the only breweries in the world to roast our own coffee, which allows us to be exceptionally picky about which coffees we use and how we roast them. The result is an abundantly flavorful beer that’s incredibly complex and aromatic, with loads of roast character and a chocolate-covered espresso bean finish. But Black House packs all that flavor into a reasonable package: at only 5.8% ABV, it can comfortably be consumed by the pint.

From the can it pours a dark brown with a medium head. The aroma has coffee and roasted malts with a little bit of cocoa. Taste is smooth with coffee up front with roasted malts and some hazelnut. Long smooth finish.

Nitro version on tap into a whiskey glass showing a lot of coffee translucency and slightly tanned white foam. The nose shows mostly light coffee with a hint of adzuki bean sweetness. The palate is smooth and light bodied with sligh adzuki bean sweetness on the mid palate and a slight coffee tartness. Flavors of light coffee and dark chocolate bitterness well paced throughout. This is a surprisingly drinkable stout.

On tap and on nitro at Modern Times brewery in San Diego. Deep black color and cascading beige head. Aroma of cocoa dust, coffee, smoke and chocolate. Flavor is coffee forward with smoked malt and light sweetness. Velvety soft palate. All around a great small stout that's really easy to drink. Awesome. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

16 oz can. More coffee in the nose than in the flavor, but even here it doesn’t mask the underlying stout. Smooth, medium full body. Medium-low carbonation. Good bitter sweet balance leans towards the bitter side.

A dark brown stout with a thin mocha head. In aroma, bitter chocolate with loads of coffee grind, musty character, floral hops, very nice. In mouth, a sweet chocolate malt with coffee grind, musty character, powdery mouth feel, nice and chocolaty. On tap at brewery.

Draught at Watering Hole. Rich cereals, coffee, cocoa, notes of licorice and tobacco, roasty finish. Nice one, feels quite rich for this abv, oatmeal is definitely helping there.
