COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Black House is an oatmeal coffee stout bursting with coffee aroma and flavor. Modern Times is one of the only breweries in the world to roast our own coffee, which allows us to be exceptionally picky about which coffees we use and how we roast them. The result is an abundantly flavorful beer that’s incredibly complex and aromatic, with loads of roast character and a chocolate-covered espresso bean finish. But Black House packs all that flavor into a reasonable package: at only 5.8% ABV, it can comfortably be consumed by the pint.

Pint Can. Pours pitch black with an off white head. A very nice creamy coffee aroma with a slight tinge of biscuit. Creamy mouth feel also, with a nice dash of coffee (not to much) that dominates the flavour. Nice beer.

Pours black with a finger of tan head. Nose is coffee, coffee grounds, milky, little caramel. Taste is lots of fresh coffee, roast, very smooth, a bit milky. Tasty and easy to drink, relatively thin mouthfeel for the style makes it feel pretty light and refreshing. Simple, straightforward, and well done take. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Appearance was clear jet black with creamy diminishing dark tannish tiny head, no lacing. Aromas are roasted coffee, chocolate, oats, molasses with no alcohol. Taste are sweet roasted coffee, cocoa, black patent malts with touch of creamy oats and brown sugar. Palate was creamy smooth CO2 with light-medium body, lasting roasty coffee mild bitter finish. A good example of a Oatmeal Stout.

This is a very single-mindedly coffee stout but the coffee taste is fresh and vibrant enough that it is still quite good. Many beers of this style just tend to get ashy and tart and weird. This one though has a rich chocolate and coffee character. It is dry and clean and highly drinkable. This is definitely a well put together beer and seems to be built from the ground up to incorporate coffee rather than just be coffee thrown in a stout. What do I know though? Never met the fine people at Modern Times.
