Black House is an oatmeal coffee stout bursting with coffee aroma and flavor. Modern Times is one of the only breweries in the world to roast our own coffee, which allows us to be exceptionally picky about which coffees we use and how we roast them. The result is an abundantly flavorful beer that’s incredibly complex and aromatic, with loads of roast character and a chocolate-covered espresso bean finish. But Black House packs all that flavor into a reasonable package: at only 5.8% ABV, it can comfortably be consumed by the pint.

Can. Aroma is almond, walnut, coffee, molasses, and dark malts. Taste is sweet with some dry bitter cold brew coffee and walnut skin. Delicious and session able ale.

AROMA: Predominantly coffee with some oats, vanilla, and chocolate APPEARANCE: Pours pitch black, left a small tan head that went quickly, how a good stout should look TASTE: Small amount of coffee, chocolate, oats, and vanilla, everything is very light but that is expected as it is under 6% ABV, but just because it is light does not mean that it isn’t full flavored, this beer is pretty tasty PALATE: This is by far the beers best attribute, very light, smooth and velvety, incredibly drinkable and this beer is not that filling for a stout, every once in awhile I crave stouts and would like to drink more than one, and this would be a great example of a full flavored session stout! OVERALL: Great beer! will be an often pick up when I can get my hands on it!

On tap, nitro. Pours a coal black with a giant creamy head. I think that head was due to the nitro. Extremely creamy, but very watered down. Definite coffee flavor. Probably better in the non nitro version. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Certainly better than say Coffee Bender, but still not a super exciting coffee stout. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Can. 5/26/14. Pours deep and dark brown-black with a thin, oily light brown head. Aroma is chocolate, coffee, roast malt, earth, bitter-sweet; simply but really nice aroma. Taste is bittersweet, chewy, oatmeal, chocolate, coffee, roasty; finish is bittersweet chocolate and coffee. Simple but excellent. Flavor profile is very pronounced and nice. Medium-full bodied. Medium carbonation. So very nice and tasty.Nice laces throughout. Wowzers; great beer.

16 oz can into a pint glass. The pour is lighter black with solid garnet around the edges. There is a thin khaki head that fades down quickly into a ring that then dissipates and leaves relatively no lace. The aroma is blasting with coffee. I love the roast and the coffee notes, but there is a lot more that’s drowned out. Light hints of vanilla and cocoa. The flavor is also dominated by the coffee but offers a little more of the vanilla and cocoa. The mouth feel is definitely thin, and the carbonation is light, so it doesn’t help much. This is really thin for an oatmeal stout, but I love the coffee. The aftertaste lingers beautifully and leaves a dry roasty coffee behind, which I do enjoy

Can at THOB share. Pours like cold brew ice coffee with a touch if white head. Starts in sweet - marshmallow stout, then finishes medium dark coffee.

Can to glass. No shortage of coffee, but unfortunately it's quite acidic coffee and borderline tannic. Oatmeal contributes to the body, sure, but that still leaves us well short of its peers. Coffee Bender puts this to shame across the board.
