Black House is an oatmeal coffee stout bursting with coffee aroma and flavor. Modern Times is one of the only breweries in the world to roast our own coffee, which allows us to be exceptionally picky about which coffees we use and how we roast them. The result is an abundantly flavorful beer that’s incredibly complex and aromatic, with loads of roast character and a chocolate-covered espresso bean finish. But Black House packs all that flavor into a reasonable package: at only 5.8% ABV, it can comfortably be consumed by the pint.

Can. Drak brown pour with small khaki head, minimal lacing. Aroma: roast, chocolate, and a lot of soy sauce. Like coffee with kikkoman. Moderately sweet with roasty finish. Medium body, chalky texture, average carbonation. Overall: way too much soy and sweetness for my taste.

Can from Bine and Vine: My first brew from Modern Times... Does it match the hype the brewery gets? Well there is a solid roast, coffee and biscuity component to this beer. Plenty of Midnight Wheat too but I sure could use a bit more sweetness and/or chocolate tone. Thumbs up on the coffee character but thumbs down on the malt backbone. ::unsure:: will get them another chance.

Sample at the DBLDP on 08/31/2014. Opaque dark brown color with a medium tan head that diminishes steadily to a film. Partial rings of lacing. Aroma of roasted coffee, chocolate and malt. Light-bodied with flavors of chocolate malt, roast coffee and earthy hops. The finish is roasty with a mocha aftertaste. Above average overall.

Bottle to glass. Pours a medium to dark brown color with a light brown head. Aroma is roasted malts, oatmeal, lots of coffee. Flavor is pure breakfast, coffee and oatmeal roast. Medium body with a lingering coffee bitterness. Very good.

16oz can shared by JohnGonk. Poured a dark brown/almost black color with a small creamy tan head. Aroma of old chocolates, light roasted malt, cardboard, earth, and caramel. Taste of roasted malt, bad chocolate, burnt toast, and earth. The coffee was lacking in this beer.

Thank you Brandon! This was poured into a pint glass. The appearance was a dark brown close to black color with a one finger white to off white foamy head that dissipated in about a minute. Light sticky lacing clung decently. The smell had a really nice espresso to roasty coffee bean with a decent oaty note all inclusive and combining pretty much perfectly. Light chocolate does come in to settle my soul. The taste was enthusiastically sweet and roasty through the chocolate and coffee bean wrapping itself around my taste buds. On the palate, this one moves so smooth and roasty over my tongue making me realize that this is deceptively sessionable. Its about a light to medium on the body. Overall, another solid beer from a company I can’t get locally. Still, an absolutely stellar beer to have again. It definitely would make a great hybrid of the oatmeal stout to the milk/sweet stout.

The beer is black with a tan head. Solid head. Very good retention. Lots of lacing. Sweet, milky coffee in the aroma. Mild chocolate. A touch of caramel. A bit of berry fruitiness. Light, creamy mouthfeel. Perfectly balanced stout flavor. Moderate sweetness. Lightly bitter finish. Mild acidity. The flavors and feel work together very well. Very refreshing. Nothing particularly jumps out but it’s an excellent stout. Lots of flavor for the abv. Easy to drink. Tastes very fresh from the can.

This is a solid oatmeal stout base with a light to medium body, but not light in flavor. On top of that, the in-house roasted cold press coffee is fantastic. Evident, but REALLY pops on the finish...finishing with bitter chocolate, coffee, caramel and roast. Another winner

This beer has a beautiful black color and strong coffee aroma. It has a flavor of coffee but is very mild. Easy drinking and very refreshing. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Can from unknown via Denver. Pours a medium dark brown/black, decent amount of tan head. Aroma stunning, delicate and roasty with chocolate and coffee most prominent but also some coconut and almond, too. Wow! Body medium with a full creaminess and a coffee/roasty bite to the finish. This really does it for me!
