COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Black House is an oatmeal coffee stout bursting with coffee aroma and flavor. Modern Times is one of the only breweries in the world to roast our own coffee, which allows us to be exceptionally picky about which coffees we use and how we roast them. The result is an abundantly flavorful beer that’s incredibly complex and aromatic, with loads of roast character and a chocolate-covered espresso bean finish. But Black House packs all that flavor into a reasonable package: at only 5.8% ABV, it can comfortably be consumed by the pint.

On tap at BierCraft UBC, pours a deep dark brown / near-black with a small beige head. Aroma brings out coffee / espresso notes upfront, with a touch of roast. Flavour is along the same lines, with espresso, a touch of roast and low residual sweetness. Medium-bodied with a fairly complex flavour profile. Very nice.

Dark brown color with tan head. Aroma has really sweet coffee, caramel, toffee and fudge. Taste starts with sweet, cold brewed coffee. Finish is more bitter and roasty with lingering coffee flavor. Body is light and effervescent. It’s a nice coffee stout but it’s a bit too thin for my taste.

Can from Mikkeller & Friends, Copenhagen. Pours a deep brown body with a medium creamy off-white head. Nose is chocolate, fresh coffee, licorice, leather, caramel and hints of muscovado sugar and brown bread. Taste is coffee, chocolate, cocoa, burnt sugar and hints of licorice, caramel, wood and grains. Full to medium body, medium carbonation. Tasty, easy-going stout with a good level of both complexity and balance.

Can from a Hop Hideout stall at the Sheffield Food Festival. Pours deep mahogany, almost black with a thin fading beige head. Mild coffee aroma. Pleasant sweet coffee roast flavour. Just a touch of light spice. Tasty, but lacking a little oomph.
