Lomaland is Belgian-style saison that’s both complex and quaffable. In keeping with the farmhouse tradition, Lomaland is brewed with barley, wheat, and corn, giving it a complex and delicious malt body that pairs beautifully with food. Czech Saaz hops are added in the kettle to give it a lightly grassy, peppery note and just enough bitterness to cleanse the palate. It’s distinctively rustic, earthy aroma comes from the unique blend of traditional Belgian yeast strains (95% Dupont/5% Westmalle) we use to ferment it.

It pours a clear pale golden color with average head. The aroma has a Belgian spiciness to it like pepper and a bit of lemon citrus. The taste has some spiciness to it as well and some nice grassy bitterness. The body is light, clean and dry. I love the description on the can as rustic, it describes it well. This was quite enjoyable and worth the buy.

Type: 16-oz. can Glass: Modern Times pint glass From: Whole Foods in Hillcrest (San Diego), Calif. Price: $9.99 for a 4-pack Purchased: April 16, 2014 Consumed: April 17, 2014 Misc.: N/A Poured a golden semi-clear color with two fingers of pillowy white head. A decent amount of bubbles coming up from the bottom. Average amount of sporadic lacing along the sides of the glass. Average-to-above average retention. Smelled cloves, banana, peppery notes, tropical hops, honey, kiwi, green grapes, light Circus Peanuts, grass hops, hay, wheat, caramel and some floral hops. Tasted pretty close to the smell, which was a good thing. Also go cloves, banana, those peppery notes, booziness, tropical hops, Circus Peanuts, kiwi, green grapes, caramel, honey, grass hops, floral hops, wheat and some mouthwash alcohol. Light body. Creamy texture. Average-to-lively carbonation. Abrupt finish. Tastes stronger than the 5.5 percent ABV. This was a good beer, but not quite as good as I thought it would be. This won’t deter me from trying more Modern Times though. Decent.

Can offered up by JBPortland... Pours a slightly hazy medium golden color with a finger of white foam. Lots of stale grass, wet clay, muddy yeast hints of citrus, apple sweetness and a hint of spice. Pretty subdued and not a flavor packed saison but the flavors are true to style just a bit restrained and hesitant.

Bad. First, it tastes nothing like a saison, at all. It tastes like a Dutch lager. No tartness that you’d associate with a saison. Strange that the yeast is all Belgian and yet the brew misses so badly. Maybe I had a bad keg, but the bartender seemed to agree with my tasting. Skip it!

1 pint can. Pours a cloudy yellow color with a small white head that has fair retention. The aroma is medium in strength with white fruits and Belgian yeasts. The taste is more white fruits--pears in particular-- along with mild spices and grass. All set nicely in a pils malt base hopped with peppery/spicy Saaz. . The palate is full and smooth with soft carbonation. The finish is long and dry. Overall: Nice very nice. A few years ago the notion of a good saison in can was but a dream, but now its reality.

On tap at brewpub
Sadly only five beers were on tap at the time I stopped by but all were excellent. I look forward to a future trip to San Diego so I can spend more time hanging out at one of the best kept secrets in the area. Make it part of your own trip if you have a car.

Aroma / Appearance- A golden body shimmers with life under a clear ivory head. A smooth presence contains a blend of dusty lemons, malt, low key hops, and other pleasant textures.

Flavor / Palate - Musty earth fills the mouth with the taste of dry sand. Dried hay and sweet citrus mix Midwestern barnyard with West Coast hops. A top notch saison takes on a Western feel. I wish I’d have had room to bring back a few cans in my suitcase.

Big can at home. Thanks Felipe! pour is hazy yellow with a fluffy white head and good lacing. Big wheaty, biscuity, lightly spicy, fruity, lemony, somewhat grassy, and bready aroma. Taste is wheat, bread, white pepper, somewhat musky, banana, coriander, and honey with a lightly spicy finish on the backend. Medium body with high carbonation. Decent saison, especially because it’s offered in 4-packs, but not really anything I’m excited to get again.
