Glouglouburp (1659), Montreal, Quebec, Canada Apr 8, 2008 Back from a Czech Republic pub-crawl this is part of my express ratings for the “typical” Světlý 11°- (Czech light Pils), Světlý 12°+ (Czech Pils), Polotmavý (Czech Amber Lagers) and Tmavý (Czech Black Lagers). Non-typical beers will receive personalized descriptions after the express ratings. ----------------------------------------------------------------
How: Tap at brewpub (Modrá Hvězda, Dobřany, Czech Republic)
The look: Clear dark ruby body with a medium beige head
To me a typical Czech Tmavé (Czech Black Lager) is: Dark malts and barely any roastiness sensation. Some dark fruits flavours (raisins with a little figs, dates and prunes) wrapped in smooth dark caramel (borderline toffee) and a subtle chocolate note. A bit bready. Moderately sweet without much hops presence and only a mild bitterness (voluntary unbalanced it seems). Very smooth body, like a watery cream.
This one: As above but a little but a bit more roasted and dry than the average Tmavé. Very good. (Rating #1660) MartinT (4120), Montreal, Quebec, Canada Mar 25, 2008 My Bottom Line:
This cherry-flavored mokaccino of a Tmavé thrives on its sensual body and elaborate malt complexity. Another highly successful Modra Hvezda product.
Further Personal Perceptions:
-A thick layer of foam covers the apparently clear ruby-tinged dark brown.
-There are few hops in this one, even in the finish.
-The nose is rather fruity, swaying from cherries to cranberries, from raisins to prunes.
-The body on this one is as hedonistic as their Polotmavé’s.
On tap at the brewpub. Quack-Duck (1403), Konstanz, Germany Mar 23, 2008 PETka z pivovaru. Very dark, nearly nlack colour, large beige head. Malty nose. Full-bodied, flavours of caramel, chocolate and cocoa powder, also roasted malt. Slightly hoppy, not too sweet overall. duff (5398), Sydney, Australia, England Oct 5, 2004 Tap@Modra Hvezda. Sweetish, soft and roasty. Mild, with some light acidity, medium bitterness, pleasant tmave, very drinkable. I also agree this has a touch of jammy fruit to it. Pretty classy stuff.
