COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Moerlein Barbarossa is slow-aged with a deep reddish brown color and a malt aroma derived from Munich dark malt. The balanced finish invites a toast to the return of a legend.

Pours brown in color with some reddish undertones. Slight head when poured, but disappears shortly after. Smell is all malt and that distinctive lager smell. Taste is much the same, but I get a little sweetness and some tobacco/smoke flavors as well. Medium to full on the mouthfeel and creamy. This is a nice addition to the CM lineup.

Bottle from alexsdad06. Pours a deep amber with a thick tan head. Aroma of lager yeast munich malts, and dark bread dough. Medium light bodied, with some very slight wateriness in the texture. Flavor of caramel, nuts, grain husks and toasted malts. Just a touch of bittering hops on the finish to keep this in balance. Not bad, but has a nagging cheapness somewhere.

UPDATED: APR 28, 2008 Very good for a Lager. Full of flavor, yet full or smoky tones. Tastes smoky, yet balanced. Nutty flavors and malty ones abound.

12 oz bottle, very nice deep red color yet very transparent with decent tan head. Dominant aroma is the sweet roasted malts. Flavor is sweet, nutty malts. Body is solid, actually has the body of a heavier beer with a higher alcohol content than 5.2. Overall a good dunkel, another good beer from christian moerlein.

12 oz. bottle. Pours a clear deep copper color with a small diminishing beige head. The aroma is moderately sweet toasted malts. The flavor is more toasted malt, light nut character, light chocolate, and some watered down cola sweetness. Medium bodied. This is decent, but not up to some of the earlier beers they have released in the past year.

Pours a copper color with an off-white head. Sweet malt aroma with toasted malts dominate. Flavor is better then I thought it would be from the aroma with toasted malts, some nuttiness, and a little chocolate flavor. Not too bad but no that great either.

Draft at Arnold’s tapping party. Poured clear dark brown color with a moderate off-white frothy head that mostly lasted with good lacing. Medium body with a smooth texture and soft carbonation. Medium nutty, toasted malt aroma. Medium bittersweet flavor with a medium sweet finish of moderate duration. My expectations were met.

3/26/2008: Moerlein Barbarossa Double Dark Lager has a transparent dark amber/chesnut color with a diminishing dark beige/ivor head. The aroma is grainy with some subtle roasted maltines to it. The flavor is also grainy with toasted malt, roasted coffee, a slight nuttiness, and some watery chocolate/coffee and cola flavor in the finish. It also has the same creamy-like yeasty flavor as it warms like all of the other new Moerlein brews... The body of this beer is medium and there is really nothing to note about the palate or mouthfeel. Overall this is a drinkable, but not overly exciting beer. It really isn’t any better or worse than the original <a href=http://www.ratebeer.com/beer/christian-moerle Moerlein Select Dunkel...

12 fl. oz. bottle from Kroger in Harrison, Ohio. Rating #2 for this beer...

UPDATED: MAY 6, 2010 Draft, at the tapping ceremony at "Arnold’s" bar in downtown Cincinnati, Ohio - Moerlein Barbarossa double dark dunkel is a very dark reddish-brown hued brew with a very pleasing roasted malt aroma and a fine-bubbled, just barely off-white head of foam. Tastewise, this is a very good dunkel, although its body was a bit lighter than I expected and it does seem to have that watery ending at the finish that some reviewers of the Moerlein beers have commented upon. Overall, another very decent brew from Christian Moerlein.
