Moerlein Barbarossa is slow-aged with a deep reddish brown color and a malt aroma derived from Munich dark malt. The balanced finish invites a toast to the return of a legend.

Not much of an aroma on this one... just hints of roast, and a bit of sweetness. This pours a clear, light brown, that appears red when held up to the light, with minimal head. Slight sweet flavor, with a bit of tartness to it. The finish is roasty, with hints of chocolate. Not a bad beer, but thereís not much here.

Looks like cola plus a loose beige head. Smells like corn plus some light coffee notes. Flavor has a hickory wood notes, hints of coffee and chocolate, but not much. Finishes ever so slightly bitter.

Bottle referred to as a double dark lager. Pretty good for a Dunkel, sweet with a hint of dried fruits and caramel, some port notes, carbonation just a tad high, brownish maroon color with no head or lacing

Very disappointing. Bready, burnt caramel, sweet malt. The aroma and taste coincide to provide a BLECH sampling of a dunkel. Not much here.

A clear maroon/dark brown color. Slight off white head that was small and had minimal retention and lacing. Some burnt orange highlights around the bottom of the glass. Did leave a slight film on top. Picking up a creamy, buttery, earthy malt driven type of nose. A touch of sourness. Maybe even detecting some bittersweet chocolate. A rich, slightly sweet taste. Still mostly earthy malts, but I also got a small taste of some smoke or toastiness. Again, slight touches of bittersweet chocolate. Maybe even the faintest bit of a "grassy" hop. Medium mouthfeel that was sort of watery. It was smooth and it did an ok job covering the palate. This beer was just ok in my opinion. I could probably drink it if it were offered, but I just donít think this is my favorite style of beer. After 1 or 2 I would probably want to move on to something else.

Bottle. Poured with a reddish-tinged brown color with a macro-like head of fizzle. My initial taste is off-putting, with a moist bready caramel bite taking the predominate position in the flavor. It didnít get better as I went, so I didnít want to finish it. On the bright side, I think itíll add a nice twist to the pot of chili Iím stewing, so in it goes. (#3963, 8/15/2010)

Bottle. Nose has dark malts, light nuts, and that elusive sweaty socks / spaghetti sauce touch. A little sweetness. Pours red with amber hues and steady carbonation, creamy beige head. Taste is loaded with rich malt, smooth nuts and light toffee and dark caramel and fig, just a touch of earth and dark fruit, but not anything more than a bg accent. Medium-light body, smooth and soft, fun to rub around, with a little body from the lasting carbonation. Some brown sugar but itís light, and some even lighter tang. The mouthfeel is super pleasurable, just creamy and seemingly spreadable on a baguette. Good one.

Red brown, weak head. Nose of nutty malt and roast. Flavor follows suit. Overcarbonated and generally thin and lacking in any real character.

Overall a good balance of hops and malts. Nice color. Better on tap than in a bottle.

The last six pack from my August trip to Cincinnati. Deep brown clear brew with a thin, off white head. Active carbonation. Aroma dominated by malt and caramel. Flavor is sweet malt at the start but with a finish nicely balanced with subdued hops. Rather simple in flavor and character, but whatís in there is quite good.
