UPDATED: APR 28, 2008 Very good for a Lager. Full of flavor, yet full or smoky tones. Tastes smoky, yet balanced. Nutty flavors and malty ones abound.

4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Originally reviewed: 6/18/10. 12oz bottle picked up in Findlay, OH. Poured into a mug. Pours a dark sweet tea-looking color with a thin tan head resting on top. Little retention, less lace. Scents of dark fruits, raisins, faint alcohol, and warm pumpernickel.
The body is of moderate depth. Carbonation level is decent. Good crisp feel. As far as flavor goes, this is one of the best of the style I’ve ever had. They really nailed it where it counts. Great bready flavors abound, some faint molasses, and plenty of chocolate malts. This reminds me at times of a chocolate drink. Very well-done. I could have another, no problem. Recommend.

Pours a translucent mahogany with a medium, white head that stays. Superb lacing. Malty, slightly roasted aroma. Full, creamy mouthfeel. Malty flavor, slightly finished by some sour notes in the finish. Nonetheless, a good example of the style.

4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
pours a deep brown with ruby edges. Sweet caramel and roasted malt dominate the aroma. Smooth and creamy, with caramel, roasted malt, and a bit of bittersweet chocolate. Perhaps a touch of smoke, too, but definitely not enough to make this a Schwarzbier.
Tasty and balanced, and with just 5% ABV, you can enjoy Barabarossa all day

Smooth and delightful. rich with a wonderful lingering aftertaste. The flavor is enhanced as the beer warms up a bit. I plan to have this beer again, directly off the storage shelf at 55~60 degrees in the next few days!

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
UPDATED: MAY 6, 2010 Draft, at the tapping ceremony at "Arnold’s" bar in downtown Cincinnati, Ohio - Moerlein Barbarossa double dark dunkel is a very dark reddish-brown hued brew with a very pleasing roasted malt aroma and a fine-bubbled, just barely off-white head of foam. Tastewise, this is a very good dunkel, although its body was a bit lighter than I expected and it does seem to have that watery ending at the finish that some reviewers of the Moerlein beers have commented upon. Overall, another very decent brew from Christian Moerlein.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 15/20
It pours an almost clear, deep caramel with a creamy khaki head. The aroma is delicately malty, with a sweet caramel character and notes of fresh biscuits. There is also something of a metallic tinge to the aroma, probably because these are twist-off caps and the beer has been slightly oxidized.
The taste: remarkably clean. Dry, with touches of caramel malt flavor and toast. Again, there is the slightest bit of oxidation, likely my fault for treating this beer badly and drinking it old. The palate is wonderfully dry, with a smooth but not overpowering carbonation. I could easily have another. By the way, this one has left thick rings and serious honeycomb lacing on my glass.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle. Black bread and chocolate malt and prune aroma. Chestnut with a small, quickly dissipating tan head. Dark bread, sweet chocolate malt, and prune flavor. Smooth medium body. I really loved the chewy dark bread flavor going on in this one, and found it going down far too easily. This is one I could drink a little too much of if I wasn’t careful.
