You’ve discovered Moerlein Emancipator, a robust Doppelbock brewed to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the repeal of prohibition. Six varieties of uniquely blended malts create a smooth toasted character with a deep brown color and complex hints of caramel and toffee. Celebrate the emancipation of America’s honorable brewing tradition this season by rolling out the barrels of Moerlein Emancipator Doppelbock.

UPDATED: APR 16, 2013 Nice strong aroma and dark brown appearance. Toasty and Carmel/chocolate sweetness. Lot of flavor with almost no hop presence. Lot of flavor but goes down easy. Flavors are fairly simple and not very complex but good at what it’s good at.

12 oz bottle, poured into a shaker pint at ~45 degrees F. Appearance: Pours a bright, clear slightly ruddy amber, not unlike how a good Vienna lager looks, and forms a solid finger of pale beige head that swiftly dissipates. Plenty of carbonation is visible clinging to the sides of the glass, as well as rising steadily through the beer. Looks rather more like a bock than a doppelbock, so we shall see how the rest goes. Smell: Doughy bread with toffee sprinkles, something not unlike leather, and a hint of cooked raisin. Taste:Definite confirmation of the bread from the aroma, as the taste of fresh-baked bread swells to fill the entire mouth from the first sip. Toffee notes abound through the liquid loaf, as do some earthen and leathery tones. Here and there, hints of cooked raisin and walnut peek through, and the finish is full of alcohol heat. Mouthfeel: Light and creamy, not quite as sticky as one would expect for a doppelbock. Overall: Overall, not a bad beer. I’d think it shades more into the bock category than a doppelbock, but it’s tasty nonetheless.

12 ounce bottle. Big caramel color and upfront taste. Malty with toffee and very slight chocolate. I’d like a richer, deeper flavor for the style, but decent.

Rich melanoidin red-hued beer, with an okay beige head. Rather malty nose, melanoidin and candi malt dominate the bouquet. Candi malt and dank beer flavors reluctantly intermingle. This one has a bit of a cough syrup flavor, as well as the taste of stale, old grains. Dry sherry finish.
