Beer Guy99 (250), Maineville, Ohio, USA Mar 20, 2008 This is a really good example of Doppelbock with rich caramel notes, a deep brown color, rocky tan head that lasts a long time. Alcohol content is fairly high as expected. It’s very malty sweet as the style demands but I’d like to see a little more balance and astringency as in Spaten’s Optimator, which I think is the quinticential doppelbock. Moerlein has really stepped up its quality and the boldness of its beers and this doppelbock is no exception. Great label, wonderful historic pedigree, they don’t make a bad beer at Christian Moerlein and they keep getting better.
Ryan82SM (41), Louisville, Kentucky, USA Nov 28, 2008 The toasted malts are evident in the aroma, pretty nice. Appearance is a dark brown with a red hue in the light. Toasty flavor with the caramel and toffee hinting in the near the finish. Fairly lively palate. Reminds me more of a stout than other Doppelbocks I have tried. I thought this beer was alright, but too unbalanced to reach the next level. couchand (164), Iowa City, Iowa, USA Nov 20, 2008 Emancipator pours a dark auburn with a similar creamy tan head. The nose is pretty strongly metallic, which again I will attribute to cap-related oxidation. I can still get a strong roast malt and burnt coffee aroma.
The first taste is thick and very creamy. Later, I can pick out some of the roast flavor, but it is much too sweet. I feel like my mouth has been coated, and not in a good way. The metallic character cuts through the sweetness more than the malt flavor. Very cloying. jjpm74 (3448), Connecticut, USA Nov 16, 2008 Bottle courtesy of alexsdad06. Pours mahogany with a thin white head. Smells vegetal and of sweet malt with some spicy hints. Tastes of chocolate, spice, caramel, some rich malty hints on the finish. Darkover (1230), Columbus, Ohio, USA Oct 29, 2008 Dark red/brown color with a small tan head. Aroma and flavor of sweet dark malts(caramel, figs, dark fruits.) golubj (1085), Redwood City, California, USA Oct 18, 2008 Bottle, received in a trade. Light brown pour with reddish hints. Aroma is caramel malt, vanilla, and light chocolate. Flavor is the same, mostly sweet, soft chocolate in the background, and lightly roasted in the finish.
